Yep. Cops are anal about proper use of the seat belt even in cars like the 68-72 A Bodies that had those horrible "roof" belts. Anyone ever actually tried using them? Hands down worst designed shoulder belt ever.

Re: gas prices
I have always hated the belts in my 74 Elky. The lap belt is great, but the shoulder belt is a pain in the ... to get fastened. The door is so long you have to close the door before the belts will reach. JB

Re: gas prices
I wholly agree with you on the seat belt issue, Rago! Like you, I normally wear it. But, I was pulled over one time when I wasn't. No excuses...just didn't feel the need at the time, I guess. Anyway, after it was over, I'm thinking like you...who the hell am I hurting by not wearing it? And, I'm looking around me as I drive home and take notice of all the distracted drivers texting or talking on their cell phones...seemingly oblivious to their surroundings. Now really...who's the greater risk to public safety, here? Right now, I think the seat belt laws are the hot political button and the cops are instructed to go out and enforce it.

Re: gas prices
Of course the cops have seen enough blood & guts to be serious about belts, and likely don't look forward to the next time. I always wear the belts, since I'm not ready to be a statistic yet. When I started flying in the mid 60s, the belts were mandatory in airplanes, so I just got used to them.
My wife was in a bad wreck in 2003, and if she didn't have the belts on she would be history, and even then she hasn't worked since as an RN (head injuries).
So you could say I'm a believer in belts, but that has nothing to do with pushy govt laws.

Seat belt laws are like helmet laws BS, it for the insurance companys benefit not yours. We are grown men and women we know that we can get hurt but inside my car is my private property and no one should be able to tell you differently.
It kind of opens the door tho wearing seatbelts in your recliner at home. Id say for sure there should be a law for children but not an adult.

Re: gas prices
I don't think any rational person can argue that wearing seat belts saves lives. And, should we be wearing them when we drive...sure. But, I do think that option should be left to the individual. And, I certainly don't think it's necessary for the cops to set up dragnets around town to specifically catch and ticket violators simply because some consumer safety group is putting pressure on authorities to further their cause. I've heard all the arguments about how we'll be a burden to society if we're critically and permanently injured if not wearing seatbelts. But, the reality these groups don't seem to accept is that you can't legislate all risk out of our lives. But, they keep trying! Just this morning, there was a local story of how we should look into legislating truckers to clear the snow off their trailer roofs because a piece of ice flew off one recently and broke the windshield of a car on the freeway. For pete's sake...it snows in Minnesota and with it comes some hazards. Not to mention, the mere cost of initiating and enforcing said law just because of a few random occurences. But, these groups and their legislators have to justify their existence...so on and on it goes.

Re: gas prices
I wont drive around the block without my seatbelt on. When it comes to manatory laws, I believe the law serves one purpose. The police have so many things aginst them catching lawbreakers that they need every break they can get, and there is a law that they have to have a reason before they can pull over a car even if they are convinced the people in the car have broken the law some way. If there license plate light is out or they do not come to a complete stop at a stop sign, that gives them a reason to pull a suspicious car over. Many people who have warrents out aginst them are caught this way. JB

Re: gas prices
It used to be that way in Minnesota. But, they pushed and pushed until a new law was passed that allows the cops to pull you over for simply not having a seat belt on. Or, if your passengers don't have their belts on. Is that really necessary...I don't know. Maybe we all should wear helmets, have roll bars in our cars and those NASCAR head restraints so we can REALLY be safe!

Re: gas prices
I'd like to have a roll bar in my car, but you have to have 5 point, no give, seat belts to keep you from hitting your head on the roll bar. JB

Re: gas prices
a cop tried to give me a ticket for no seatbelt in my monte. i told him he needed to stand corrected and showed him my Lap belt was on. he scratched it off the ticket, but gave me a No front lisence plate ticket instead.even tho it was behind the grill,he was not to eager to go look.

The govt is trying to protect people from themselves it seems. Some people need it. Gotta admit that the so-called average citizen is pretty dumb some times, and ya only have to drive around a bit to see it.

Re: gas prices
Well, a few days ago I put $10 of 91 in at a 76 near me. It was a hair over 2 gal's. I'm thinking of looking in to airplane fuel. The added octane would be good for the motor plus it's low lead. I need it for the soft seats in the heads. Well cost of a hot rod.

Re: gas prices
I found 3 staions in my area with 100 octane at the tap, not canned. All well over $7.50 gal. One is even 24 hour. Sweet.

I've seen prices at one station change twice in one 24 hour period. So much for trying to figure what's next.....

dude those things blow...the ones in the 70 are worse than the ones in my 74, it seems more dangerous than just wearing the lap belts.

i always wear the lap belt but the shoulder one is a pain. im a believe in belts as well, i nearly shattered the windshield of my volvo with my head during an accident because i wasnt wearing one, at the time i was playing football in college and was 265 at about 10% body fat, the doctors told me that if i hadnt been so bulky from my weight training and blessed with a sturdy bone structure, id be dead right now.

Re: gas prices
I'd take it to court and tell the judge that it was a terrible factory design on the belts and they would not stay fastened and with a little luck maybe the judge would have rode in a G3 before and know you were right. Re: gas prices
If you get '75 belts they are one unit not two. If you do, I want yours.
For rollovers the G3 where the best. There roof line comes from that fact they have a factory "roll bar" in them.

The new rollover laws that the Feds come up with was the reason GM did not make any of the usual open sided "hardtop" models after 1972. JB

Re: gas prices
I'm just waiting for one day to get pulled over in my Plymouth, a cop thinking it doesn't have seat belts. It does though. Lap belts were added a few years ago. If it were to ever happen, hopefully I'd get let off once the officer sees it has seat belts. If he's a prick though, he'd probably find something else to give me one for. I hope that never happens, because ONE ticket in the Monte or Plymouth, and I will no longer be insured to drive either car.
