I had an '86 Pontiac 6000-STE, the Poncho version of this car. After the '76 died, I decided another A-body would be great. and found a one owner STE with 90,000 miles on it in 1999.
It was a fun car, but I blew the 2.8 up shortly after I got it, rebuilt it. 0-60 substantially improved, from 11 to 8 seconds. It was nearly as fast as the 76 was. Had as much room inside as well. got much better gas mileage too. 18mpg on the highway from the 305 to 23mpg from the 173.
Alas, it suffered from '80s GM-ness and while a durable car, just a bunch of little things kept befalling it and I then ran across a smoking deal on my current '95 Explorer, that was 10 years newer, could carry more crap back and forth to college, and I didn't have to mess with it all the time.
the 82-96 A-bodies are decent cars, just watch out for the ones that haven't been maintained.
