FURD... WTF?
BTW -
Why does the word F O R D get misspelled in each post?!?
I don't think much of their vehicles, but they aren't on the government bailout list so they are winners with me.

Furd and all their workers were lucky, no bail-out BS. If GM was left on it's own, I'm sure a lot of folks would have been out of work until now, along with the 9.1 % we have currently. Sad state of affairs in this country....

I think I speak for a lot of people, when I say, I'm a car guy. I like everything. Yes, GM is my favorite manufacturer. I bleed GM blue. But FoMoCo made a lot spectacular cars, as well. I don't dislike a car, just because of a little blue oval on the front.

While I agree w/ 74Monte for the Mustang and Shelby inspired Cars...I can say owning an everyday, run of the mill Mercury Montego (Sable/500/Taurus); F*****g Obviously Regret Decision. If you want something good or great from Furd, you have to shell out big bucks, like ZR-1 money for example or at least 40k+. As far as daily drivers go, they can keep 'em all in my opinion from experience & ownership...had an Escort also which was a money pit, like my Merc. I've had Jeeps, Dodges & GM's...Furd is at the bottom of my list of Domestics.

Re: FURD... WTF?
if you guys think fords are the worst of the domestics, take it from someone who works on cars for a living, anything dodge/jeep/chrysler is the biggest piles of whoa nelly on the road. Out of all the domestic brands, no other manufacturer has more poorly designed, underperforming, cheaply made vehicles than them.

Funny how different people have different experiences with cars. I've owned two Sables w/Duratec engines and they went over 160K with very minimal maintenance. Owned three early-mid 90's Explorers and hit 200K on two and 175K on the other with only routine maintenance.

Re: FURD... WTF?
Poorly made vs. poorly designed are two different things in IMO. The interior of my 06 Dodge looks cheaper than the interior of the 97 Dodge. I think this is a by product of Mercedes keeping Chrysler's cash for themselves.
I do like the new Dodges. The new Charger has me drooling. The interior is first rate.
Poor design is stuff that isn't so obvious. Like the 3.5 engine that Dodge uses. My 97 had one, and I liked the power it had and never actually had a problem with it. My sister had a Concorde with the same engine and did have a problem. The water pump is driven with the camshaft timing belt. It is also prone to fail when their are over 100,000 miles. So when it fails, the engine stops running. The newer 3.5's are now interference engines, so when the water pump fails, you are likely to destroy the entire engine instantly.

Re: FURD... WTF?
I had two good Fords at the same time, a '40 pickup with a Caddy engine, and a '40 coupe with a Olds engine. The other good Furd I had was a '49 2-door, flathead V8, a good engine in it's day. Owned those in the 60s, as fun cars....family cars were always GM of one model or another....Pontiacs or Cadillacs...
In regard to Chrysler products, my next younger brother retired from the Jeep plant two years ago, as a supervisor. I could have done a discount deal for a new Dodge pickup, but folks I know who have them seem to have transmission problems, so I'm still driving my old '92 Chevy pickup, with 257 K miles on it.

Re: FURD... WTF?
A friend and his wife, who is a car nut, went to look at the new Camaros, Mustangs, and the Charger. He said the fit of the doors, hood, and trunk etc on the Dodge, was really bad.
His wife said that the new Camaro was "too dam quiet, and needs some mufflers"

Lets not forget union greed.... Does some really deserve $25/hr to put lugnuts on a car for 8 hours a day?

Does your dad know the engineer's who designed the CVT in 05? (they prob work for Volvo)...I just spent an OBSCENE amount of money on a Transmission...Furd CVT w/ AWD. Only have 114K on the Car the Duratec 3.0 is good but the tyranny is way under engineered. I researched this and Furd does not even make parts for their CVT's anymore. Junkyards are charging over 2K for trans w/ unknown miles on these cars and the good trans shops are buying them, & rebuilding them w/ good scavenged parts. If i told you what I just spent on this thing you'd a brick. Guess I should have done more research but fair warning....if you have one of these transmissions and you plan to keep the car, get your checkbook ready. I maintain my cars and don't abuse them. I have never had a new car that the trans has failed. It's also funny how when these cars turned back from 500/Montego...to Taurus and Sable...there was a completely new transmission. Makes you wonder if they new this would fail and did not care. They even hid the trans dip stick under the MAF & Air Filter Housing. My li'l 2000 Jeep Cherokee went for over 250K with no more than regular maint., 2 brake jobs and an O2 sensor. If i had to choose between buying a brand new Jeep Cherokee and getting a Furd for free...I'd happily take the Jeep.

Re: FURD... WTF?
education doesnt have anything to do with how much you get paid you want more money work harder. dont hire 10 people give them union wages and tell them to take turns pressing a button all day. everything is automated in the manufacturing process so much that humans are practically obsolete. they say the bailout was to save jobs but whose job did they save if anything they have prolonged the inevitable. car companies have been declining since the 70's and its due to govt interference. if you want better quality tell the govt and unions to stick it.
p.s. i dont hate the idea of unions i hate what they have become

Re: FURD... WTF?
I work on cars all day everyday as well. sorry they all have their stupid problems, but its the ones that come in more common. Fords just plain suck, Getting parts is a hassel, replacing parts is a hassel. How about the 5.4L tritons, I mean come on how F***ing stupid can they be. They blow the spark plugs out of the head in the earlier years then in 04 or 05 they redesigned them and they are even worse, you break the spark plug off in the head, Try to find anyone in town to replace them is near impossible, and expect a $800 plus bill, I think the norm is $100 a plug.
Also what about the numerous fuse blocks and wiring problems they have. I even had a Furd burn down in my shop because of the cruise control switch mounted on the master cylinder.
Chevys on the other hand, pretty much only issues we get with them are dead gauges, idler and pitman arms being out, AC and vent actuators, Leaky AC compressors, parts are easy to get and easy to change.

Re: FURD... WTF?
The mention about union wages, 25 bucks an hour to screw lug nuts on.....it's actually more than that at the GM places here. 28 bucks plus all the bennys, which comes close to 80 bucks an hour. Now you know why your new Chevy costs so much !!
Then there's the old Saginaw Steering Gear plants here......most got tore down, and the former owner since GM, Delphi, went down with chapter 11 for that division.and the remaining ones are owned by.......you guessed it....CHINA ! Those chinks are buying up everything here. And the wages there are now 14 bucks an hour there and not with any bennys. Not really enough to support a family....the new name of that entity is Nexsteer.
And again about union wages.....that's what made the middle class in this country, which is disappearing fast from corporate greed and work sent overseas...trouble there is, unions got too greedy, just like the corporations and their Washington buddies.
I'm wondering how long it will be before Chinese designed & built cars will flood the market here.....

Re: FURD... WTF?
The cars we like on this forum, if in good or better condition, are a better buy for the buck, over a later model with electronics that may or may not be reliable for the long haul, from what I see.
The CCC computer system wasn't bad to fix. I own two cars & two trucks with that. Then in '96, they dumped the next gen of crap on us, with many more parts involved, to screw up, like fuel rails, multiple injectors, two or three more O2 sensors etc......
If that wasn't bad enough, along comes OBD III......all in the name of progress (?) for mileage & emissions .......I think I'm getting sick........barf .....

Re: FURD... WTF?
they want mileage, dump smog stuff for one. dumping exhaust gases back into the intake is not progress. secondly run manual transmissions with double or triple overdrives. with the computer technology they have it wouldnt be hard to make a car cruise 65 70 miles an hour at say 800 rpm. let the computer adjust the cars fuel map and there shouldnt be a problem if tuned properly

Re: FURD... WTF?
I had a T-Bird a few years ago that was a really good car. The Dealer was good to me and the car went every where, rust got it. Id take a 11 Mustang over a Camaro right now as well. I think all Mfg's come out with junk boxes from time to time. Fords seem too have had lousy font ends for years and torque boxes that rot out under old Mustangs are a really dumb design as well as that ignition set up they had in the 70's.
