Formerly Owned
Wanted to start this for anyone who wants to post & discuss cars they formerly owned that they liked (or not) :-)
My 1998 Chevy M/C AKA Bruce...I loved this car. Quick 3.8L FWD V6 was not very fuel efficient but had a bunch of torque and could chirp tires without even blinking. Sold it to a Dad & his Kid who's a student. I bought it for my kid & she used it in high school but then came college. The proceeds of this 56k mile beauty went to purchase my Malibu & towards some other things at the time. Thanks Bruce! I ride by the car all the time on the way to see a client the kid really takes care of it.
My 2004 5.7 L AWD Dodge Durango Hemi. This was my favorite daily driver of all time- all the bells & whistles plus it got 19 MPG avg back then, with B@LL$ to spare. They were built on the Dodge full size Ram truck platform but it drove like a dream, was comfortable & luxurious. I wish I had this one back ( & it got 25-30 mpg). Used it for work from 2004-2006.
Sold it w/ 45,000 miles & then got a great deal on my POS '06 Grand Caravan, which I would rather die than ever post pics of (no offense to anyone else who has one but I hate it & I think it hates me back!)...

Re: Formerly Owned
Nice Monte. I had a 1998 LS...got it with 127k...sold it with 155k, then I got my 1997 LS from my great aunt. She was the original owner, and it had 27k on it when I got it in July. Now has 35k.
Just wondering...I see that your former 98 Monte is the LS model...how did it have the 3800? All 95-99 LS models had the 3100...95-97 Z34 model had the LQ1 3.4 DOHC...only 5th Gen(95-99) Montes to receive the 3800 was the 98-99 Z-34...

Re: Formerly Owned
What was the engine code in the Vin for the 3800? (Maybe you're right?)

Re: Formerly Owned
I'm not sure.
I find it odd that yours wasn't fuel efficient. Mine is very efficient. I usually get close to 300 miles on a tank.

Re: Formerly Owned
It guzzled when driven hard ( and i drove it hard). Thing was fast. You're correct- it was a 3.1 L (Thanks for making me look bad)

Re: Formerly Owned
Hehe, yeah I've done that (driven hard, guzzle gas).
And yes, the 3100 is pretty quick! The one in my old 98 was getting tired out and didn't have much pep left, but my 97 does. Only 27k old lady driven miles. It does a better hole shot than my 74 Monte.
3100 SFI: 160HP
LQ1 3.4 DOHC: 215HP
3800 Series II: 200HP
Though the 3.4 was the fastest among the 3 motors in those Monte's, its the most problematic.
Did yours have the infamous "piston slap" when cold?
I don't care what anyone says...I love FWD.

Re: Formerly Owned
Wow, that's rare. 3100s are known for ticking when cold. Giver 'er 5- minutes, and its smooth. My 98 was pretty bad, but this one isn't as bad. My aunt didn't get the oil changed when she should have. Might have been better if she did. She didn't understand the "3000 miles of 3 months whichever comes first" rule. If it wasn't 3k miles since the last, she wasn't getting it changed. She'd go over a year w/o a change. Until I started doing it.

Re: Formerly Owned
I love that 3.8L buick motor. I have my father in laws 99 lesabre with the 3.8 series II that I bought from him with only 32k on it. He drove it NY to Fl. and always averaged 31-33 mpg. It still does great. Never a problem with it and I now have 130k on it. Still looks good. I just changed the upper and lower intake gaskets last month because I saw a drop of antifreeze just below the throttle body. Cant believe that they get $1000+ for that job. Only cost me $146 for the new upper manfold with gaskets and the lower intake gaskets. Not a bad job at all and went very smoothly. I plan on keeping the buick to at least 200k+. Probably wouldnt get much for her but shes still in nice shape. I use my Duramax when its time to play. My father in law replaced the buick with a new '04 Impala again with the 3.8L. He still has it and wont part with it. It just turned 42K. He's keeping it as the mother in laws car.

Re: Formerly Owned
Yupp, good motor. My mom's 03 Monte Carlo SS/HS has it, 78k.
My grandma's 02 Monte SS has it too, and shes creeping up in 160k miles and ZERO problems.

Re: Formerly Owned
GM is king when it comes to engine production & variety. Many improvements since our 73-77's. (Although I blame the EPA & Richard Nixon for the debacle in "standards" from 75 on till about 86.)

Re: Formerly Owned
Anywho, to stay on topic...this is my old 1998 Monte Carlo LS. I did a LOT to this car. I transformed this car from when I got it, to the day I sold it. Got it with 127,396 miles, and sold it with a 155,600. It was a fantastic car for 2 and a half years, but I could not pass up getting my hands on my great aunt's 1997 Monte Carlo LS with 27k miles, original owner.
For SnG's...here is my current 1997. I lots of plans for her this Spring/Summer!!

Re: Formerly Owned
Built this car for my daughter while she was in highschool 3 years ago. I bought it to flip it and ended up dropping a 350 in it and a new front clip and paint. Had to much into it to flip for profit and my daughter liked it at the time. She drove it for a summer and learned to drive a 5 speed in it. She Took it to school two times and parked it on the driveway and went back to her winter beater. She did not like the attention she got driving it. Ended up selling it for a big loss. It was fun to drive though.

Here is a ride I bought and sold 2 years ago. It was different, first tilt front end I ever owned.

Re: Formerly Owned
Wallyuph, I like that tilt front end. Was that fiberglass? It does not look like it. If so, do you know what company made it? Did you like the tilt front end? Why did you get rid of the car, if its any of my business, LOL. JB
