That's some good info and I didn't think about plug behind the plate. That will explain why I couldn't find the wire when car was on jacks and I was looking laying under the car. Will check plug behind plate tomorrow and let you know if thats where the problem was.

I always pack the connectors, like that one in the harness, with DC-4 silicone grease. It keeps the moisture from corroding the spades in the connectors. I use it on light bulb sockets also, sorta like the grease that the factory used in sockets.

besides all the electrical, check the rubber fuel lines that come off the sending unit, make sure they are not dry rotted or cracked. I had the same problem, needle would dance around or say full when it wasn't, and sometimes the engine would turn off.

rubber fuel lines might be one of the issue why I couldn't start the car right before needle stoped moving. Will check it out and replace.

According to my manual, your gauge wire to the rear is tan. If you do find the tan wire to the sender, grounding it should make the gauge go to Empty, since the sender is a rheostat that goes from 90 ohms (full) to zero ohms (empty)
I had the tank off of my '74 because one of the hoses started to leak. It was a good time to prime & paint the body above the tank too.

Maybe you can replace the seal in the steering box. You are likely as good at it as the guy who did it during the rebuild. The seal probably has a number on it, that you can do a search for.
