11" Rear Drum Brakes
Im usually very good at tracking down parts when I need them, but I would have never imagined these to be so hard to find!
What I'm looking for are 11" rear drum brake backing plates for my 76 Monte Carlo. What size rear drums do you other guys have on your 73-77 A-body cars? I had no problem getting drums, hardware, springs, etc. But these backing plates seem to be impossible to find. Reason I need them is because over time, the shoes wear a few small grooves in each side of the plate, which can cause unwanted friction in the movement of the brake shoes. Mine still seem to work ok, but since I'm doing a brake overhaul, I thought I'd just replace these too.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Got a mig welder? A couple minutes spent welding and grinding is way easier than changing backing plates. I've done a few sets this way, worked out very well.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Not sure about '73 to '75 years in Malibus etc, but '76 & '77 Elcos have 11 inch rear drums.
New parts for retro fitting are available from Master Power Brakes

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
My 73 Monte looks to have 11" rear brakes too, from what I can tell through the rally wheel.
I think I might just forget it, and down the line get the rear disc kit after I get some other more important things done first.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Disc conversions are expensive, but at least they are less labor to replace linings. Every time I do drum brakes, the rusty hardware needs replacing, which is another 10 bucks.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
I've been batting this one around too- the drum upgrade versus rear disc conversion. If my rear end does not turn out to be a posi, then I'm going to try & find a used posi rear end with either the 11" or that already has rear disc brakes on it. That will be down the road though. Going to just cruise "as is" for a couple years, if i ever get the damn car to the point it's driving
I think I read on here somewhere that 76 & 77 Malibu have 9" rear drums & earlier models are smaller. Not too sure about Monte.
BTW Jimi- when ya been hiding?

The small drums, '73 to '75 are 9 1/2 inch. Not sure about Malibu, since mine is a '74 with original small drums.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
I found a disc conversion for about 400-500 bucks. They go up from there though, depends how fancy you want.
I dont know whats up with the different drum brake sizes. I had no problem getting EVERYTHING ELSE for them, but cant find backing plates. Oh well, mine arent really bad, I just like doing everything when Im replacing parts. I need axle seals, and I think I'm going to get some nice new calipers for the front, and new brake lines, as mine are a little dry. Might as well.
Hey 77Mali, I dont know where I've been hiding, just been busy I guess! Work, band, and just everything else in between. I recently sold my 97 GT Mustang, and found a super nice 04 Cobra. I've been driving that, but I still get the black 73 out. That baby still needs the door fixed and painted, but thats a ways away. I would like to do a lot of little inexpensive jobs in the meantime. Im needing a radiator so I can finish painting and detailing the engine bay. And now the damn AC compressor, which is probably a year old, is leaking a bit from the front. I'm not driving the 76 until I get the axle seals done, I dont want to ruin my new rear brakes. Then I'll probably work a bit on the interior again, and hopefully get the AC working in that one. It use to be ice cold. Then some new springs and shocks! All in due time.
here's a few pics from a week or so ago.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
That's more than enough,it's the front brakes that do all the work. JBpila wrote:I don't drive fast enough to need rear disc brakes My Elco project has 11 X 2 1/2 drums on a Furd 9 inch.. that should stop it OK....

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Those big rear drums keep the nose from diving too much during heavy braking, same would go if it had rear discs.
I'm working on selling a bunch of parts that were to the 97 GT Mustang I use to have. I saved a bunch of the mint original parts when I swapped things out. Hopefully its enough money to get some new Monte parts

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Been looking at a disc conversion kits and front disk upgrades for my Chevelle and SSBC has some nice looking kits, but they only offer a 9 inch rotor for the front. I called them yesterday and they stated that due to the spindle shape a larger rotor could not be used in the front. I know that I have seen these with larger rotors than that in the front.
Seems like I hit a brick wall every time I try to get started on something.
Any tips are appreciated.

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
I bought a set of those 11" drum brakes from Master Power Brakes through classic industries for my Nova and returned them before ever installing them.
The 11" drum is almost 10 pounds heavier per side than a finned ten bolt stock drum. That is just plane rediculous weight.
If your interested I put up a thread of the weights and measurements of the stock vs the MPB set here,

cut and paste if it doesnt workhttp://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191642

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
When you say "finned stock drum, are you referring to a 9 1/2 inch stock drum ? The pictures look like a 9 1/2 in compared to a 11 inch with wide lining surfaces, like 2 1/4 wide........
If not driving 90 MPH a lot, we don't even need bigger rear brakes, since like mentioned, the fronts do most of the braking.
I had a '76 Coupe DeVille, with 12 inch drums on the back. Went to the local auto store to get them turned. They asked what brand truck they were for !

Re: 11" Rear Drum Brakes
Only thing is, it's un-sprung weight. Same thing is true when swapping in a 9-inch Blue Oval rear end. The third member being separate adds some weight. I should have weighed mine, but didn't think about it in time......

my 76 malibu has 11" back brakes, but in no way are they as heavy as the master power brake kit drums.
