I am sick and tired of people ridiculing others for the way they care for their car. I was a member of "Monte Carlo Club" on Facebook, but just left because I keep getting beat down for how I care for my car, and I am tired of it. Why? What do you gain for belittling someone for how they care for their car? You care for yours how you want to...and I'll care for mine how I want to. This past weekend was the Monte Carlo Nationals in Tennessee (I live in Michigan). There was a post saying next year, it would be in Indianapolis. I made a comment about bringing it to Detroit, because I would like to take my car, but don't have access to a trailer to take it out of state. And in came the negative comments!

I have more than one reason to NOT want to drive my car far: It has 71k original miles, and I want to keep it as low as I can. The car is 38 year old, ANYTHING can go wrong with it on a long road trip. It doesn't have A/C - it gets hot! And lastly, I will not leave it outside overnight. I already had a classic car stolen out of my driveway...I'm not letting it happen again.

Now, understand...I DO drive my car locally, A LOT. I got the car 5 years ago, and I have put over 11k miles on it. That's a lot for just a summer driver, IMO. I just don't want to drive it half way across the country.

Take a look at some of the comments spewed my way:

"you dont need a traler i just did the hot rod power tour its more fun to drive it i used to have a traler queen they are no fun so i sold it"

"Too far? really? Many members would love a meet to be that close to home. Be glad you don't live out West as the Nationals will never be within a reasonable distance for me."

"I hate to chime in, but geesh, what a list of piss poor excuses. Cars can be washed, windows can be opened, cars can be fixed, alarm systems can be installed. Pristine condition or not, cars are meant to be enjoyed on the road. Not having air, worried about a car getting dirty, or broken down is part of the fun. Or are parts all of a sudden scarce?"

I don't know about you...but think it's un called for. I'm not sitting there ridiculing THEM for driving their cars across the country. You want to do it, and you have fun, be my guest! Just not for me!

Why can't people understand..."Different stroke, for different folks"...

Who cares what others think? It's your car and you needn't explain anything because - it's your car.

The internet brings out the "best" the world has to offer when it comes to others "opinions" on what someone else is doing.

I wont belong to a forum that flames people over anything that some of the members don't like. If they don't like something, it's their problem.
What you do or don't do with your car, shouldn't be an item to make fuss over.
Anyway we're glad you are here ! Smile

I dont think anything was a flame or breaking nuts it just seems to be opinions,11k in 5 years is good,my 73 has gone maybe 5k in 12 years. What are ya gonna do? When something goes on the internet whatever it is I guess its open to opinion.

I got hammered on because I took pictures with my kids and I standing on my car. That was not fare to me. It's MY car and I can do what I want. Some people are just plain Rude.

On a side note, I put 12,000 miles on my 73 in 10 years.

what you do with your car is noone`s business, don`t waste your time with idiots who have nothing better to do than stick their noses into other people`s business. although the first 2 comments don`t seem offensive to me,merely an expression of oppinion.

about your concerns with driving a car on long tours, i wouldnt worry about it breaking down. from my experience american cars are very well made and older they get better they are:) you also dont seem like a person who would neglect his car, so i suppose its well maintained. it should run like a swiss watch. as far as extreme engine failure goes, it can happen to ANY car regardless of its age. our family friend has a Furd s-max which is practically new and it broke one of the camshafts, ruining the engine

Having a few tools & spare parts in the trunk isn't a bad isn't a either, a spare ign module, a fuel pump, and maybe a couple belts. You don't go far if the water pump belt fails etc.
And a fender cover is a good idea, if having to fix on the road. Gotta be careful of the paint ya know ! Very Happy

i often stand/sit on my car. the paint is shitty anyhow and with my 180lbs its not like im going to bend anything.

i agree with pila though, have some basic parts and tools with you and you can go anywhere. my friends and me once lost a timing belt on an 49 oldsmobile in the middle of hungary, nothing but fields for miles around. luckily we were with 2 cars and a friend went to the nearest town to get it.

It's pretty much the same thing in the Lowrider community.

I can understand on a low mileage car, or maybe u don't feel comfortable driving that far, that's totally understandable to trailer it. My car was far from low mileage when I got it, plus it used to be my daily several years ago. But I did have fun driving it to 2 different out of town shows, a little nervous but fun. Don't worry what other people think about ur car, u do what ever u want to it.

Oh and I used to sit on the hood/header panel all the time, with the kandy paint job and nothing happened.

It is fun to make those road trips in old cars . If you get a few guys together with their cars and load up the trunk with what you need and go. If you dont have exactly what you need your bud's will. The memories are worth it too.

Smile It was great to meet you, Sam! Glad we were finally able to connect and chat as long as we did. That (the friendships) is what it is all about, not what others think of what you drive or how you treat your car ... a LOT more wrong with this world about which to be concerned, which some of us are living through right now.

ant7377 wrote:I dont think anything was a flame or breaking nuts it just seems to be opinions

Exactly. I didn't see any negativity in those comments. As far as having access to a trailer, you could rent one. I know of at least 2 people that rented a trailer for this year's MC Nats in Johnson City TN. And, for the record, next year's MC Nats is NOT in Indianapolis. They will be in Richmond IN, which is not even a suburb of Indianapolis; Richmond is on the IN/OH border.
