You might be better off getting an aluminum 5.3. They're cheaper and make just as much power. My brother's putting an iron-block one in his Wrangler, and it's making close to 450 hp on stock parts.

aluminum warps easier and is harder to rebuild if you heat em up. i prefer cast it lasts longer and you can at least beat the crap out of it befors you start having problems

Re: someone in my town already got a new camaro
If I could have any gen3 motor, realistically, it would be the LQ9 6.0 with 347 hp and 380 ft·lb stock. Do some mods, drop it in a G3 with a whisper quiet idle & instant sleeper! Too bad it's just a pipe dream...
The problem with the new Camaro isn't that it's IRS, but that there isn't any bolt in performance replacement & the one in it can't take much more power than it already does. Too bad the Z28 got the axe, rumor has it that it was going to be solid axle
This month's PHR has a list of like 20 things wrong with them, most are major annoyances. My guess is the new Camaro shares the same destiny as the GTO, SSR, & other "specialty" vehicles. They were built to spark interest in the general brand itself. Once the new wears off, bye bye. We do this stuff in marketing a lot it's almost like a legal way to bait & switch without anyone realizing what's going on or even caring.

Re: someone in my town already got a new camaro
There's no aftermarket replacement.. YET. It'll come, the car has only been on dealer lots for 2 months. Patience! lol
And the Camaro will most definitely not suffer the same fate as the GTO or SSR. See, while the GTO was a bland, boring looking rebadged Aussie car with a detuned Corvette engine, and the SSR was a really great looking novelty vehicle with a detuned Corvette engine, and they were both over priced... The Camaro comes in many flavors.
See, you can opt for the SS with almost 500 horse power, and spend up to $37,000 at some dealerships if you get the SS/RS will all the options. $40,000 max.
Or you can spend $23,000 and get a 6 speed Camaro RS with a 315 horse power V6 that is no slouch by any means.
The car is very civilized on the road, it looks spectacular (some may disagree but ever since we put one out front of the dealership, it's drawn crowds of people in just to see it), it performs better than it's competitors, and most importantly, IT'S AFFORDABLE.
At my dealership, we have already sold 17 pre-orders, 4 of which have been delivered. The plant cannot keep up with the demand for these cars and as it sits right now, if you want a 2010 Camaro and you haven't already placed an order, by the time you do get your Camaro, it'll be a 2011 model. There are no Camaros available for inventory at the moment (except for those dealerships who might have insane mark up and just won't sell) and they are expecting this to last until the end of the year.
So I'm simply here to say that any assumptions that the Camaro will fail have already be quashed - it's a success, through and through, and it's only been available for 2 months.

Re: someone in my town already got a new camaro
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, I hope the car sticks around for years & becomes more refined. The problem with the Camaro isn't the car itself, but the fact that the government now has its thumb on GM means it's just bad timing. My job IS marketing. I create promotions to get people in my casino. When people see things that are new, they flock to it. If you can hit something that they can relate to, even better. I'll try to explain it without going to far in depth, but here is the short story:
GM needed money, their Marketing team decided that the best way to spark interest was to bring back the Musclecar. The first attempt failed with the GTO, BUT you as a dealer can agree that when they first debuted, people came in to check one out. When word got out that they were just big jellybeans on wheels, interest dropped & so did the model. Now with the Camaro, people reminisce their childhood. Whether it was sitting on the boulevard in a 67 Z/28 or going to drag night & seeing that sweet late model burn up the track, most people remember a Camaro sometime in their lifetime that brings back good memories. So how do you take the bad times & slow sales & turn a profit? People tend to forget the bad things going on when something reminds them of the good times. Hence the Camaro has probably boosted your pay check indirectly by duping more people onto car lots to look at the new Camaro & end up buying something else.
I recently started doing a promotion where we give away $500 every 30 minutes on the weekends. People began associating our casino with money being given away & our income has increased. Income on non-promotion days has also increased slightly. Once this promotion runs its course & the monthly revenue drops back down, bye bye old promotion, hello new. Hopefully I didn't confuse you, but I look at this from a money perspective.

Re: someone in my town already got a new camaro
I still don't think there is any risk of interest in the Camaro faltering. OK, maybe a little risk as there's ALWAYS a little risk.
GM isn't going to go anywhere, you can be absolutely sure of that. Even with the government in control, it would be economical suicide to completely eliminate one of the largest job providers in the country - I mean look what's already happened in Flint and Lansing and the other areas where plants have been shut down... imagine that on a much larger scale. Devastation.
At the very worst, GM will shed more brands. Cadillac still sells among the elderly and wealthy, Buick is big with the Chinese, Chevrolet is still big with those Americans who aren't brain washed by liberal media... the only brand I see going the way of other historic brands like Pontiac and Oldsmobile would be GMC. There is zero need for GMC to exist, they're just Chevies with different cosmetics, they don't have a single unique vehicle.
If GM were stripped down to one brand, it would be Chevrolet without a doubt. That is the worst that would happen, Chevy will never go away. That said, the Camaro will continue to do well. Cobalt and Corvette are the only other coupes Chevy offers. Some might claim that there's no market for two door hot rods, but we sell just as many 2 door Cobalts as we do 4 door.
Now, here's the thing... those Cobalts are priced just under $20,000. A Cobalt SS can cost up to $23,000. What's the base price for a V6 Camaro with 315hp? Oh yeah, $23,000. I'm betting that someone looking for a hot 2 door Cobalt might be willing to step into another realm altogether and go for the base Camaro.
Then you get those eyeing the Corvette C6. They see it sitting there next to the Camaro SS/RS, which costs around $20,000 less but still has plenty of bark (and a lot more style IMO).
We had a woman stop by the dealership because she wanted an Impala, but then she saw our V6 Camaro sitting there, the one we got for the grand unveiling of the Camaro, decided to check it out, and bought it immediately.
If people would discard their prior notions as to the quality and appeal of GM's vehicles... they might be surprised to see that we ARE still selling cars, it's not game over yet, and the news media is simply harping on an easy target.
Swine Flu, anyone? Super terrible pandemic, all over the news about how it's the end of the world... turns out that if you had it, you might not even notice because it's the same as the regular flu, and just as easily curable. It ended up being no big deal.
Hmm.

I find it funny how people all assume that cars like the Camaros and Corvettes are nothing but a bunch of gas hogs, yet most Corvettes get better gas mileage than the so-called "Smart" cars. For example, my father's C4 always gets at least a guaranteed 25 mpg (even when cruising at 70 mph), and he doesn't run the risk of driving around in an eggshell death trap.

I think they should have built the bird and not the camaro.......
I Personaly do not like the camaro at all ....I hoped I would....I wanted too...Seeing a lot of them ....A lot yellow......SUPER UGLY TO ME...I always thought the bird was a little more upscale.......Always been chevy but GM is bankrupt because they built what they want people to have instead of what people want...........I can not name a single gm product I would buy today.......However to be fair I dont adjust well to modern crap....

i hear ya man this modern stuff sucks. everybody rags on my carburetor and tells me fuel injection is the way to go but i get the same throttle response if not better with my carb. it starts faster, more tunable and reliable. and i dont have to have 50 pounds of wires and computers and stupid crap like that to run it. Its a beautiful thing!

but I like the camaro, I like that bird concept, I like the new Silverado, I liked the old silverado, The cobalt is okay, dont care for any of the other cars chevy makes except the corvette. the list goes on, either you like it or you dont.

Well theres about five new camaros running around my town right now, Theres the orange one, theres a blue v6, theres a silver one with black ss stipes(my favorite), theres a yellow one(dont rememmber if it had stripes or not), and theres a black one. most of them are ss'. personally i like them, they remind me of the 69' wich is one of my drem cars(either an ss rs or a z28) i like the way the front looks, its pretty much the only sports car that said F you to the box then drove threw it and blew it up But if it gets like the challengers around here, forget about it.

LOL!
I've had instances with both my '76 MC Landau and my '87 MC LS/CL where people at gas stations have called 'em gas hogs ... while themselves driving large trucks. Sorry, my cars get better gas mileage than some brand new trucks that size!

Thats how mine is, i was at a gas station one time putting some gas in the 'vette, and some douche driving a hybrid started telling me how i need to get it off the road because its a danger to the environment, and how it probably gets like 8 mpg. I cant say everything i said to him on here but it wasn't nice

LMAO, I just got this. Isn't this an oxymoron? Corvettes are the worst eggshell death traps! Let's think about this:
Power ranges from 300-700hp depending on model & year(estimate)
Full fiberglass body
Some have no frame
Optional convertible!
Don't get me wrong, I love some generations of Corvettes & I've seen some wicked ones, but I've also seen what happens when one of those cars hit something. Not pretty. Personally I would love to own a 66 427 coupe if I ever owned any.

I've seen three so far in Portland. The first one I saw was at the Sherwood Cruise-In. It was a black SS. This same Camaro came into the gas station I work at and filled up his tank. Here are the Sherwood pics I took:
The other two I saw were red and orange.

Lol, Rago! I was talking about the "Smart" cars being eggshell deathtraps! Sure, the 'Vettes are all fiberglass and make tons of power, but hell, have you ever seen a Smart car wreck? Let's just say that most people are half the men they used to be (both figuratively and literally). Honestly, front end impacts tend to rip out the whole front end of those things! At least in the Corvette you have something between you and the thing you've been hit by.
