It only "just" started making noise!
A customer came in with a later model Chevy truck that was making noise in the back, and had a vibration....
The pad was gone the plate was gone and the caliper piston wore thru half of the rotor surface and thru the vanes. NICE.
BUT..... It only "just" started making noise!

Lemme guess, 01-07 GM... I had the same thing happen to my 01 'Burban and believe it or not the noise was not that noticeable.

Okay, at night, surely you would see the sparks flying out dazzling the side mirrors!

I've seen stuff like that over the years. Â I once saw a ford explorer driven until there was no rotor left, it came in because the pedal went to the floor because the piston came out (completely) 0f the bore. Â I just recently had a Honda civic (drive) in with a broken upper ball joint. How it made it in I'll never know, the complaint was "bad vibration"

Modern vehicles are really insulated from noise these days, so if nothing slaps the driver along-side the head, they don't know it's coming apart Â

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
Our alignment guy took a Ford pickup on a test drive, customer complained of a vibration, he got back, drove it up on the alignment rack and the wheel fell off to the side when he lifted it up! The load of the vehicle was the only thing keeping the upper balljoint in its socket, Â when we set it back down you could push the balljoint back into place! Imagine if he hit a pothole on the test drive!!

I drove a jeep for a vibration. The customer played down how bad it was. Turns out someone failed in replacing a u-joint and the rear joint only had three caps remaining.

Nice! We get the "it started making that noise right after the accident" meanwhile the front CV axle is bouncing off of the wishbone, or a driveshaft is clunking because the u joints were worn out 15,000 miles ago.

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
I did breaks for a guy once on a Jimmy and on the front when I was taking of the wheels I noticed a metal ring with clips on the outside of the wheels. Upon further inspection found out this was the mounting of his PLASTIC hub caps that had melted away from the heat of the metal on metal brakes. Needless to say it turned into a long day for me.

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
One of my sons had an early 80s Olds Cutlass. I was changing a front tire on it, and discovered that the upper ball joint was not even attached to the front spindle. I don't have a clue to why the thing stayed together.....good thing these cars are redundant, and hang together for the not-too-bright public.

This just came in today and the first thought I had was this thread. Â ok whats wrong with the picture? Â The brakes were just done at Walmart(!) now they have a noise.

I'll take a shot. Is the pad on backwards?? Looks like the metal backing is against the rotor.

Yes sir, that's it. I didn't even know Walmart did brakes. (Maybe they shouldn't lol)Joe73 wrote:I'll take a shot. Â Is the pad on backwards?? Â Looks like the metal backing is against the rotor.

What was the customer's reaction when you told him what the problem was? Did you show it to him?

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
We showed it to him through the wheel and advised them to take it back to walmart. (it's their problem, if we get involved it would become our problem...and we didn't get paid to do it). Just the way big business works unfortunatly. The owner was a younger kid who (I believe) didn't really understand what a bonehead move installing the pad backwards really was.

I think he's entitled to a Re-do. ASE certified ("A-h0les Shirking Everywhere"), you only get the cream of the crop @ Wallymart...workers & customers alike. Â

There is also the possibility he was a cluless diy'er who won't own up to his own handy work. The car was a wantabe tuner turd car. (blacked out Jetta).

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
I don't see what the problem is. Once he's worn through the metal backing, he'll have a fresh set of pads, right?

This is great, I have a shop with my brother and a friend too and run into stuff like this all the time. I try my best to get pics of it when I can.

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
Maybe he always wanted "metallic brakes"Â Â
I used to use sintered iron brakes from Velvet Touch until they quit making them for cars.

Re: It only "just" started making noise!
yes, we got a new oreilly autoparts hub store near us. we used to order from advance and wait an hour. Oreillys might be higher but parts within 20 mins is the best. Autozone is usually on their game too.
