Re: It's Official...I'm a dinosaur.
I sooo wanted one of those StingRays back in the day. They were so cool...especially, the ones that had the shifter on the top frame member. One birthday, my father took me to the Western Auto store to pick out my birthday bike. I lobbied hard for the StingRay...but, somehow my dad convinced me that they were just a quirky fad and that I'd soon wish I had gotten a conventional bike. I reluctantly gave in and came home with a new 3-spd. men's bike. Remember being so disappointed...yet, trying to act appreciative for him buying me a bike. Don't think I ever recovered emotionally...lol!

Ha, yep, I sure do.
But, all these "chillin'" is driving me crazy, especially as I watch my bank account dwindle. I do NOT understand how people can be comfortable being unemployed. I'm not. But, since I maintain my website & FB page, people think I am content. NO. I'm trying to make the best of a horrible situation ... & trying to keep my spirits up & stay positive. However..........................

Re: It's Official...I'm a dinosaur.
Sounds like Western Auto was THE place for bike purchases in the 70s mid west.
There was a kid in my neighborhood that got a bike that looked like a motorcycle, it had the plastic gas tank, knobby tires and everything. Hated that kid.
Another kid got one that was white with red, white and blue Evel Knievel stars and stripes on it (Huffy maybe?). It wasn't the official AMF Evel bike, but it was close.
Hated him too.

PS>>>>Of course, this was around 1976, when the Bicentennial stuff made EVERYTHING red white and blue.
I was nine-ish and I remember having a lot of stuff with stars and stripes on it.

Back in the 70's we used to play a game in the neighborhood called "Ball Tag". If you were it you hunted down the other kids & hit them w/ the ball, then they were it. One day there were no tennis balls, so we used a baseball. There were many, many welts, bruises and bumps that day- not to mention the busted out back-glass on a Caddy.

Re: It's Official...I'm a dinosaur.
We had a running battles with kids from a nearby subdivision over a schoolyard. No ball-tag, but what started as mouthing off escalated to dirt clods. We lost ownership when they showed up with BB guns.
I thought about that the other day when I read this:

We had a game called 500 points. Throw the football in the air call a number who ever caught the ball got that many points IF he was still holding after we beat the crap out of each other.

Not quite but we'd leave ours in the freezer overnight to harden. Remember those snowball makers? The red ones?

Re: It's Official...I'm a dinosaur.
Clods are the chunks of dirt that are found around freshly dug soil.In farm country and the rural South it's pretty common for the kids to play in the dirt.(Probably not as common now since many kids today aren't allowed to get dirty or "play war.'

There does seem to be a difference in attitude and work ethic. A lot of older folks are there because they want to be, and don't seem to resent pitching in.
Speaking of clod, I read an article written by a 30-ish year old today using the terms "onboarding" and "onboarded" today. He was referring to hiring a contractor. WTF
I hate the jargon. They think it sounds articulate, but they really sound like that Damon Wayans inmate Oswald Bates character from "In Living Color".
