Re: Well, off to the races!!
thats good, I think mine broke a piston last saturday. After going to a local cruise-in I drove to our shop to work on the 73 some. Pulled up to the door and it was knocking BAD, Just all of a sudden thing. So I got a ride home. Got my truck and trailer and trailered it home. Got it off the trailer and fired it up to get it up in the parking spot and it was knocking so bad that it wouldnt run, last time I fired it up to move it that night it had completely stopped knocking. The next day I went out to figure out the problem and ran great no problems at all. Drove it back over to the shop and checked the oil and it had metal in it. So im guessing a skirt broke off or something.

I thought you already knew your problem? LOL sorry man I had to.
All jokes aside, that sucks to hear. Guess it's a good excuse to drop your compression & go turbo right?

Who said the motor had to go back into the SS?

Broken skirt and she should keep running no matter how bad she knocks.
I wouldn't crank her over again, or you may be digging deeper into the cyl walls.
In my stupid experience, a 350 replacement piston with a broken skirt will slap like a hound dog but will still run, you might find something deeper there...

Re: Well, off to the races!!
yep, I think the ring lands and the ring is gone. Im unsure at the moment. I drained the oil and while there was some metallic in it, there were no chunks. I used a bore scope and looking in the oil pan and found nothing abnormal. I did a compression check and all cylinders were between 170-190 psi while number 2 cylinder is 70psi. I used the bore scope and it dont look to good. So the motor is coming out to be inspected. But I think the ring is Toast. Hope the cylinder is ok though. Find out tomorrow night I guess.

Re: Well, off to the races!!
Bummer dude. Was is a good bore job? Maybe honed a little too far?
When I first bought the malibu the motor was supposed to be 30 over. After I blew 3 skirts off and pulled it apart It was 34 over and honed crooked.
I did end up with a piece of oil control ring on the magnetic drain plug... talk about a "gulp" moment.
Good luck man, hopefully that cylinder is alright...

Re: Well, off to the races!!
Got it apart today. Short block is great, everything was in the heads. My valves guides are trashed and it killed the valve seat on number 2 cylinder so there was my pressure loss. I guess im gonna go fight the machine shop and see what they will do since I just paid a ton of money a few months ago for them to fix all this bullsh!t on the heads. This ticks me off. The bottom of the guides stick down about a half inch into the runner of the head and one was completely broken off and beat the hell out of my piston. so that was probably my knock. The cylinder looks good and I think I can clean the piston off with a file and some sanding. Havent got to the bearings yet or the lower end...

Got the low end apart. Its perfect, never had a motor come apart that had about 2000 miles and 12 passes on it that the bearings looked BRAND NEW. I mean perfect. Gonna clean up the piston tops and throw it back together.
