Buick in 2013

Guess it wasnt such a good idea to get rid of Pontiac. I really want to put a bunch of curse words about what I think about this but I wont.

I'd love to rock a new Buick if it was worth rocking. Cheaply put together v6 front wheel drive with overemphasized styling lines just make it look lame. However I would rock this as a rental car, I'm pretty sure I know a couple places to Dukes of Hazard that thing. I also wonder how well it takes to a magnificent nuetral drop/brake stand. And then I might see if it will go into reverse at freeway speed, oops my bad.

I haven't seen the 2014 Buick, except that pic, but we have a Park Avenue Ultra that seems to be a good car. Being supercharged, it does have good power and decent mileage. Big Buicks have always been sort of a step down from Cadillac in luxury, and Pontiacs another step down, but Pontiacs were in the racing scene way back in the 50s.
But everyone isn't performance minded like we are here.
And the person who wrote that article has his own opinion, which not everyone shares.
The current models of just about all cars are mid-size, even if they call them full size.
Getting rid of Pontiac was a sad event. I owned a lot of them over the years.

One thing for sure...I'll never own an SUV. Pickup trucks are top heavy enough, without having a top heavy family vehicle.
But the public is fickle, and generally not too bright anyway, so they buy four-wheel drives where they will never use it except as a status symbol etc.

I'd take that car. I like the looks of it. I wish they would bring back that 3800 engine. Good power and great fuel economy.

Funny how people arent screaming anymore that gas is in the 3.50-4.00 range. Also no screaming that auto makers (buick for example) have, in my opinion, shoved smaller cars down out throats. MY 99 lesabre with 3.8 and my father in laws 04 impala again with a 3.8 were both driven to Florida for years. My father in law keeps meticulous records of everything especially mileage. Those cars got 32-33 on the highway consistently.

Then I buy a 07 chevy uplander with a 3.9. Rented them on two occasions and loved it. So I bought one and I can average 27 mpg with it. Not bad for nowadays. Same front wheel drive as the lesabre and impala, same ballpark overall weight. But 5 mpg less than engines built 5-9 years earlier. Hmmmm. I bought the lesabre and impala off my father in law when he went with a nissan altima WITH A 4 CYL. He took a good ripping from me about not buying a GM especially since I made him buy the lesabre and then the impale both with the same 3.8.

Now he raves that he's getting 33 mpg with the altima going to florida. I had to "shed" some light on his situation and now he doesnt say anything anymore. He downgraded in SIZE to an altima from two full size cars. He downgraded in engine size, 6 cyl. to a 4 cyl., to get the same mileage. He never mentioned it again.

Now, just last week, I traded in the uplander. Only 70k on it, looked great, ran great, just wanted something newer for the wife. And she wanted more mileage because its just a grocery getter. Searched high and low and even sat in some foreign competitors to see what they have. I wanted to go with the Traverse or something in that range. Well, low and behold, 07 uplander 27 mpg, 13 Traverse (and competitors for that matter) 24 mpg. WTH ??? Again with the worse mileage. Are we going backwards. Same deal with all the competitors but I wanted to stay GM or at least american. All dealers told me that if I wanted to get 30+ mpg with an suv type vehicle I have to go smaller with a 4 cyl. Long story short (LOL) I have a brand new 13 chevy Equinox. 4cyl, AWD, Stability control, traction control. So at least the wife has some grip with the AWD again. She still misses the Tahoe I had. At least I fit comfortably (6'3", 275) in the Equinox.

My daily driver is my lesabre but I do have my 07 GMC Sierra 2500HD, 6.6 Duramax Diesel. Bought it new. Its the new body style. Only have 36K on it right now but I only use it for hunting, towing to fishing tournaments and gathering firewood. I have to say 660 ft. lbs. of torque at only 1600 rpms is REALLY nice. Never done it, but 4 wheel burnouts are pretty cool..

BTW, chevy CRUZE is getting the 2.0 litre turbo diesel by the end of the year. I'll be flipping the Equinox when the diesel become a little more mainstream. Or the hydrogen/electric catches in the next 2 years.

We have a 2013 Lacross. The wife fell in love with it. Its her car But I have to admit I like to drive it. Not anything like getting almost 40 mpg!!!!! It has the four cylinder engine that shuts off when you stop. Dont ask me how this thing works but it does. First sign of trouble it goes though. Too nuch electric junk for me to work on!

Joe,I couldnt agree with more on the 3800. Mine is still going strong too. My father in law as well after 3 3800 powered cars now drives a Hyundai, that gets a little better than either of those cars (MPG). Its been a very good car though (The Hyundai). They want people shopping Lexus to shop Buick and that isnt going to happen. I still think that to appeal to a younger generation Pontiac is where it was at,they were on the right road with them,then the S#$t hit the fan and that was it. I have gotten more than one compliment on my G8 from a teen at a gas station or a friends kid or something and even a teen today still knows what a Trans Am is which says a lot.

The 3800, or 3.8, has an interesting history. Buick used it in the older cars for a while, then sold it to American motors. Then GM bought it back etc.
I had a Buick Regal limited, an '84 with the 3.8 version. The oil pump on those years had the gears running in the aluminum front timing cover. When the cover got worn, along with wear on the pump gears, oil pressure suffered.
Mine had the be fixed twice by the dealer. The last time was when the oil pan rusted through & leaked. This all occurred around 90K miles from new.
A family friend gave my youngest son an '80 Pontiac Sunbird, his first car. It was an odd-ball, with rear wheel drive, 3.8 Buick, and TH350 trans. Most were FWD cars. And of course it wouldn't start until oil pressure activated the oil pressure switch, to energize the fuel pump.
So, we're back to the 3.8 oil pump fiasco. I replaced the gears, and it was OK for a while, so I sold it & bought the kid an S-10 4X4 for running around at college
And don't ask why, but I have an '85 3.8 sitting on the shop floor, which I hate to scrap, & would rather give away. !!

The later versions, the so-called 3800, don't seem to have oil pump problems, and run at least 10-15 more PSI oil pressure than the old ones.
