130R Empty 130R

Post by JB2wheeler Mon Jan 09, 2012 6:50 pm

Chevrolet has a new concept car rendering of a rear wheel drive small/midsize car. I love the idea as presenteds and love the roof on it. If the Camaro had a roof on it like that I would be a lot more willing to buy one. It is a hatchback. JB

ITs rear wheel drive. The average person on the street has front wheel drive rammed down their throat until they think thats what they have to have. A lot of accidents haoppen because of FWD, they are harder to drive in an emergency. JB

I learned the hard way about FWD and lift throttle oversteer. I was so used to how predictable my 76 was, when I started driving its replacement, a 1986 Pontiac 6000-STE, I didn't try and see how I could lose control of such a great handling car.

I found out on a winding road that was slick with rain, behavior that would bring the rear back in line on a RWD vehicle, caused that FWD 6k to snap the rear around twice, and put me sideways into a ditch, damn near rolling it. Flattened the two tires on the drivers side, and denting the rocker panel, thanks to a rock that kept it from going all the way onto its side. That car was a blast on dry pavement, but anything slick and it was a handful, no where near as forgiving as the 73-77 cars are.

I have a '97 Monte Carlo (3100 SFI FWD) as a daily driver, and it is fantastic in all conditions. Handles and takes corners so much better than my '74 Monte. Does a better hole shot, too believe it for not, lol.

IF they make it, which they probably wont, it will be limited to a 4 cylinder engine with a turbocharger. With a standard shift, it would be a ball to drive and still get good gas milage. JB

I like the concept car, they need a 6 cyl option for the US market though. What I'd really like to see from them is a Chevelle built on the Camaro platform. It's been 35 years & they wouldn't have to work too hard to do it...but they wont.

I have an old '85 Caddy FWD beater, which I really like to drive. It handles great, and gets great mileage, because of the little 249 Cu IN V8. Haven't had a session with it on slippery roads ( yet !) Works good in winter in snow too.
The 4 cylinder turbo'd engines are making some new cars quite fast, with good mileage, so they can be a great daily driver.

Not 100% on board with the 130R yet ... but I do like it.

Interesting the names I've seen mentioned for it ... Chevette, Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Malibu......

You can over-drive anything; front or rear drive.

I would take a Chevette or Beretta over this styling exercise.
Just becasue they drew it up doesn't mean they will do it.
