air cleaner Empty air cleaner

Post by pila Sat Jun 21, 2014 6:36 pm

I would like to locate a stock 4-barrel air cleaner that would fit for my '74 Malibu. Any ideas ?
Most people probably don't use one on a modified engine. I would like one for taking pics of the engine, for insurance purposes.

Ive seen guys use a stock air cleaner with a good element and just drill large holes in the bottom. Looks stock but performs.

Maybe look for a '84 or older camaro, (or any v8 g body for that matter) in the junkyard.
How about something like this?...

I'm thinking I want a stock type. I was looking through some parts I have stored, and found one. It needs to be bead blasted and painted, so the search can end !
But thanks for the responses. When searching for one item in my stuff, I usually come across something else I have been looking for  Very Happy

Mine didn't come with the OE one, I figured you would want a OE hi/po one instead of a single snorkel stocker.

What carb are you running?  You have a Caddy Big Block in there, no?  Is there room for intake ducts?

You can prob run a dial snorkel type for big blocks.  I'd check e-bay for Buick, Olds, Chevy and Cadillac BB units from maybe 66-78 as a start.

Those would work good, but I want a stock looking one.  The insurance company I'm looking into may not like a modified engine car.

Of course the fuel divider & hoses may be a problem also, But I could use a camera angle to avoid those.

air cleaner Empty little bitty parts in the air cleaner wanted

Post by 76Chevelle2Tone Fri Dec 30, 2022 4:39 pm

I have a reman air cleaner assembly. Looks nice enough. What has failed are the little parts within the snorkel. From my 77 Chevelle service manual page 6e-19 they are listed under the thermostatic air cleaner: air bleed valve, diaphragm spring, temp spring, control damper assembly (from the hot air pipe). I hope there are lots of interchange parts for these. Hopey hope.

Not exactly sure what you are looking to do.  I've played around with a number of stock are cleaners and don't recall that the Thermactor A$$'y was serviceable...aside from the green valve that controls the vacuum to open the damper door inside.  I don't think those are available anymore.

Here's a dual 2-bbl snorkel I fabricated for the Laguna.  Both snorkels were fully functional. Made one for my 4-bbl Monte, also.

Post by 76Chevelle2Tone Sat Dec 31, 2022 1:09 pm

Yes it's the valve which the manual calls an air bleed valve. My searches have come up empty so I agree that it has not been reproed. I was looking for one that was working even if used. Also the interchange status.

Maybe there is a good reason but I can't figure out why no one has reproed the air cleaner assembly? Every Malibu has one and 99% are rusted messes.

That green valve that controls the vacuum is the same one used on virtually all GM vehicles of this era. In fact, I recently pulled an air cleaner from a '69 Buick Electra that has it. Prior to that, a '76 Cadillac DeVille and a '76 Buick Riviera. Pretty much have to hit the JY's to find one. I might have an extra one in in a box somewhere. I'll take a look. Do you have the clip that holds it in place on the bottom of the air cleaner housing?

air cleaner Empty thanks again

Post by 76Chevelle2Tone Sun Jan 01, 2023 12:35 pm

MCarlo77 you are a prince among men. Thanks for taking a look. Yes my air cleaner assembly is intact just not working properly. For reference, the part number  of the sensor appears to be 6484244 if I am not mistaken. It is called ACl thermal sensor in the parts book. It applies to series A, B, F, H, and X except for the 454 for the years 76-78. It was used more sporadically in 79 and 80 as well. It may have been used prior to 76. Separately  I was able to find a NOS air cleaner vacuum motor part #8994262 for a 77/78 Malibu V8. In my part manual the 1976 GM part number for the vacuum motor is 6487370 but I hope this will work too.

Okay...I found a thermal sensor in my stash of parts. Connected it to a spare air cleaner and tested it cold and then warmed with a hair dryer. It opened and closed as designed. It's yours if you want it.

I also resumed my research for a new one. As you stated, my '77 Chevrolet Parts Catalog shows pt#6484244. Only thing I could find was a Seller on e-Bay who has a new Carter brand TS1 and references this GM number as a replacement. I could find no information to verify this one way or the other. Otherwise, no luck anywhere.

I really don't want to count the hours spent on trying to find or interpret parts listings. A major problem is the variability of listing descriptions as well as search engine deficiencies. I mentioned somewhere else that one gets many different results on fleabay just going from 77 chevelle to 1977 chevelle. Many listings don't even mention the original part number.

Thanks for the Carter listing but yes there is no way to confirm what this really is, where it was made or whether it is OE quality. Very typical.

I find it extremely odd that with all the millions of vehicles from that era that came with these thermal sensors, that there are no replacement parts available. It's also interesting that, as far as I recall, I've never seen anything but the green AC brand on the dozens of air cleaners from all makes/models that I've come across at the JY's; despite the many aftermarket brands referenced as interchangeable.

air cleaner Empty carter seems to be a rebadge

Post by 76Chevelle2Tone Wed Jan 04, 2023 1:14 pm

I looked more closely at the ebay listing for the Carter TS 1 sensor for part 6484244. On the box there was a small ACF which apparently is ACF Industries a general light electronic parts supplier. Carter Autoparts appears attached to a modest storefront in Kansas that seems to be a longstanding company but doesn't look like a manufacturer. I would guess ACF is a legit source but am still unclear where the part was made and its adequacy. I found nothing about that. Pays your money and takes your chances.

I dig how you achieved stock-looking cold-air induction and how it all fits under the stock hood. Thumbs up

Just for kicks, I looked at some aftermarket kits and discovered they all have round hoses rather than the racetrack-oval shaped profile which is better for under-hood clearance.
When I first got my car, I toyed with the idea of cowl induction but once I got the bowtie phase II racing heads, GoFast  cold-air became a little impractical for a daily driver; you see, those heads do not have a heat-riser passage to heat up the intake manifold. That's not much of an issue in summer when conduction from the engine and warm air heats the manifold and carb but in the winter, the really cold air coming into the carb would prevent the carb from ever warming up and keep the manifold from getting warm enough to vaporize the atomized fuel. Mind you, I know what I have and am not griping about it, just admiring your setup and thinking if I knew about that back before I got those racing heads, I would likely have done the same.

air cleaner Empty servicing themostatic air cleaner system

Post by 76Chevelle2Tone Sun Jan 08, 2023 12:49 pm

FWIW the service manual says that the components (vacuum motor and the diaphragm damper system beneath the vacuum motor) in the snorkel can be serviced but drilling two holes in the snorkel at specified locations near the base of the snorkel is required to disconnect the motor and remove the diaphragm and retaining strap. Then another hole has to be drilled to insert a new short screw to install the replacement system. NPD for example lists a diaphragm package with vacuum motor and metal diaphragm but without strap. I wonder if anyone has actually done this? Does the vac motor fail along with the sensor?
