How wide in the rear Empty How wide in the rear

Post by FryeJ Wed Sep 10, 2008 10:29 am

Ok, I am considering buying a '73 SS from a guy here in Maryland. I currently own and '69 El Camino and of course I am clear on the rim/tire fitment for 68-72 A-Body. Now that I have the 73 in my sights, I am curious as to how wide of a rim/tire combo can I run in the rear without any interference. On my current car, I have 15x10 with 295/50/15 tire. This is a look that I love and would love to know if anyone here has run anything similar. In fact, on a '73, I would really like to run an old school set of Cragars. Thoughts, ideas and even pictures greatly appreciated.

And for good measure, I have attached a picture of my El Camino. If anyone has an interest in it, let me know.

Anything that will fit on a 68/72 A body will fit a 73, and probably then some. BTW, welcome to the forum. JB

yep you could probably fit a 305 or 315 easily in the rear on the 73.

yep go look at the tire topic in the general discussion. That tire is equivalent to a 295/60/15

How wide in the rear %3Ca%20href=How wide in the rear -710" />I'm running a Mickey T sportsman 29x12.5-15 on a 15x10 with 5.5 inch backspace.  I know a 30" tall tire will fit, but I'm looking to see if I can go a little wider.  As you can see I have a little more room. Might have to change to a 6in. offset to go any wider.

How wide in the rear %3Ca%20href=How wide in the rear Secure10" /> I'm sure most of you all know, running bias tires can get a little hairy. To remedy the sway caused with bias tires I run my air pressure at the maximum or a few pounds more. The rear sway bar really helps. It wasn't until a few years radial tires this wide weren't available. Hoosier and a few others now have radial tires above 10 inches wide, but they are pricey!
