Post by Jedediah Tue May 03, 2011 1:40 am

I need pics of the 73 chevelle rear without the bumber. I wont to see what i am in for when i put one back on my car. The previous owner smoothed out the rear with rivets and bondo from the looks of things. Maybe i should keep the smooth look not sure. It looks more like corvette this way.

Actually, I kind of like it, which surprises me. It would look good with split bumpers, like what was on the front of some late 70s Camaros. JB

I like the look, but I would be adding a pair of nerf bars to protect it from idiots who might bump it.

Thanks guys for looking and all your opions. I do like the looks but i am going to have to redo the work. I like the rear bumper on the 73 too. The workmanship was not done to last. I would of done all steel with it (fully welded) and done a better job on the gas tank fill neck. If you look close you will see a crack there by the lisence plate. It doesnt open right and filling with a gas can is next to impossible. After seeing a nova get rear ended today and roll away with no damage has me thinking i need some american steel back there.

I believe I saw the add for your car roughly about a year ago. I was searching through craigslist and ran across a "73 SS" that was for sale. picture was really dark and in a garage. I called and talked with a lady and she said they had to dig it out of the garage as there were kids toys all around it, I ended up not driving to look at it. I remember that back end though.

It has a small block chevy in it suposed to be a 350 but havent made sure. Your probly glad you didnt make the drive i have alot of rust to deal with. My dash isnt an SS dash either. Mmmm

2nd digit will be "D" signifying Malibu. No real way to identify from VIN, just have to find the build sheet. Not sure if there are any other ways to get 100% positive identification.

The 73 has no shocks in the back for the bumper. Just brackets. Get your drill and a grinder and get that mess outa there before it rots the rest of the car.

Trust me... they're all a work in progress. After looking at the pictures she sent me, IMHO, it didn't look like a true SS, and that's what I was looking for. The price seemed pretty decent though, but then I ran across the Laguna and thought that it would be good enough, at least it had the items I was looking for.

Your engine is looking pretty good, she run out pretty good?

I threw in a battery and she started with alot of smoke and was running excessively rich. So i put the intake and carb on. The old carb was crap. Doesnt smoke now but i havent got the carb adjusted right and it still runs too rich. I havent been able to drive her. The second time out I put it on the car lift and saw that the whole front end is dangerously shot. I have been geting peice by peice to get it drivable.

There is surface rust thru out the inside to this car. I have my work cut out for me. I need to get a good rust converter. I am planning on buying a welder and then strart peice by peice from the bottum up. Since this is not close to being stock i plan to do alot of small custom touches that wont take away from the basic looks of this car.

SS & Malibu grilles were identical other than color & badge. I say check above the tank, behind the back seat, & under the carpet to find out if there is still a build sheet. Best bet is the tank, but you will likely have to drop it & carefully remove the sheet. They can be a pain to remove without destroying. Sometimes you luck out with finding one in the seat.

Rago, I though the plain Malibu grilles were 'chromed' and the SS grilles were black...?

Not chrome. The Malibu grilles were argent/silver colored, while the SS was black. That's the only difference besides the emblems & they are removable.

Same difference. The Malibu & SS grilles still had a different finish, which is what I was getting at the whole time.
