Put the car up on blocks, covered it up, took out the battery, and took the plate off.

Done with it. Just going to drive the Plymouth for the year.

Yup. Something is ticking loudly. Used to be intermitent, now its constant. Not sure if its a rocker, lifter or what. Backfireing through the carb. Hard to start after its been shut off for about a half hour. Hard to keep running after that.

I don't know how many miles you have there my friend but I would start at the rockers. I'm sure you know they get loose over time (Mileage). Might be as simple as that. I changed mine to a roller style when I changed the heads they don't loosen much comparatively. Get a cheap arse stethoscope & listen you need to be in a Chevrolet. LOL Very Happy

A bit early for mileage but I'd still check.

Its all good. I still have the Plymouth. And when I get the 97 Monte to "where I want it", I will show it sometimes, too.

Lol, it probably is. But above the problems, I don't have any interest in the car right now. I need a break.

Backfiring thru carb sounds bad, but it could be a couple of little things hitting at the same time. First, I'd check the timing system to make sure everything is on spot there and then worry about the upper valve train. If the timing checks out fine THEN you worry about spending money. JB

kinda sounds like you lost a cam lobe, exhaust side. its getting common with the lack of zinc in new oil, flat tappet cams need that zinc. the exhaust valve isnt opening and pushing the compression back thru the intake. pull the valve covers off and crank it over, make sure all the rockers are moving like they should. if you see one that isnt moving or is just barely moving, youve found your problem. youll need to buy a cam and lifter set and start running oils with zinc or "ZZDP" like rotella, valvoline VR1, delo 400 and several others. for your sake, i hope its just something simple but, i just had the same thing happen to my wagon about 2 years ago

You can buy ZDDP & add it to any of the new oils. It's about $10/bottle @ 1 small bottle per 4-5 quarts of oil. My engine shop suggested it or to use "Joe Gibbs" racing oil. The older blocks really need the zinc. I hope that's not what's happening to your car.

Already added ZDDP. Changed the oil Monday, I used an ACDelco oil filter, 4 quarts Valvoline 10W30, and a quart of Rislone ZDDP treatment.

If it needs a new cam and lifters, I will say screw it and sell it. If leave it in storage for good.

I ounce had a rotor go bad and it cracked. Was running fine and about half way home we herd a ticking noise just like a lifter tick and it started to run just a little ruff. When I got off the highway and stopped for first light it idled just fine but making a lifter tick sound until I tried to take off. It would back fire and pop and ticked a lot. Limped it to a parking lot and found a bad rotor. The tick was from it hitting the cap. Every thing was tight and cap was on correct. Still have no idea why the rotor cracked was separating causing it to hit the cap at one spot. It’s just a thought here and a simple check.

Its not the rotor. The noise is DEFINITELY coming from the passenger side valve cover.

Have heard discussions about ZDDP additives, but thought it was only necessary for extended daily driving and high-revving race engines. After reading up on it, had no idea the lack of it in today's oils could have such immediate impact on engine wear; especially on new and rebuilt engine break-ins. Is everyone using this stuff?

x2 there, Steve. My dad just had the big block for his Chevelle rebuilt, and the engine builder told him it is a must. Asked him if I should use it in my car, and he said most definitely.

My Malibu owners manual says use only "Grade SE" oil. This is obsolete as we are currently driving cars on grade "SM" & "SN" (2010)...So grade SE was 10 grades ago (11 if you count SN). I don't have a 73-77 block (1987) but it's still a tappet Cam w/ Hydraulic Lifters (less the rocker arm mod).

There's a lot of info on this subject:
http://www.zddplus.com/
&
http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

BTW- All this BS is emissions related....I'd like to "emit" all over the EPA
