I had a 1979 pontiac Grand Prix and If my memory serves me right. That is the same as what came on mine when bought in 83 by my dad.

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
hey I got this car fired up today, I threw in a HEI distributor and sorted through the hacked up wiring and got it connected enough to fire it up, After firguring out that I put the dizzy 180 out and someone had removed the oil pressure sensor.
I filled the carb bowl with gas and put a belt on it and she idled for about 2 mins. sounds great and didnt miss a heart beat. The tranny must be shot cause it was in gear the hole time.
The 2nd time I fired it up the throttle was stuck wide open and man did that 350 ever rev to the moon and she didnt quit till I got the ignition power wire un hooked. It soaked everything in antifreeze when it did it too.

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
well we hooked up a fuel pump and a pop bottle full of fuel to it, fired it up and she purred. Dumped a gallon of trans fluid in it and she took off in reverse. Good thing it was still hooked to the tractor because it wouldve been through the barn. The shift lever was taken off and and the tranny was in reverse. Well we drove it around It runs great and even took it out on the road and got about half mile from the house and it died and wouldnt start. Got her jumped and took off like a bat out of hell back to the house and as soon as we got her home the motor locked up solid. Dont know why, it had water and was pumping it and had enough oil to run so whatever the car is apart now.

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
Well at least you got one problem solved. If it's in decent condition, it should hold up to the 350 until you go turbo big block, lol.
Check out the 350 in that 73. If it ain't too bad, I might be interested. I'm just looking for something with some kind of torque. Today I was leaving dad's going up that hill, started a power stall that lasted about 10ft before it caught traction & bogged down...
I thought of throwing in a small cam, a 4 barrel, & my ceramic coated Hookers, but I just don't want to waste my time on a 305. DD2003 did predict 369ft/lbs & 242hp running 14.8 in the quarter though. Torque was flat from idle - 3000, then it nose dived.

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
Those firgure are with the cam, intake, & headers. Completely stock 305 on the DD shows 157hp & 268ft/lbs, so it's a little optimistic, but a good estimate.
If it just completely locked up without warning, it's a possiblity. How was the thermostat? wonder if it was stuck, caused the motor to overheat & lock up?

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
Take out the thermostat & drop it into boiling water. If it doesn't open up, that was probably you're gremlin. Notice there ain't one in that 71. I pulled it to test it before firing the car up. Good thing I did, cause it was shot.

Re: The New Mint Green 73 Malibu 350
i know the carb needs rebuilt on the 71 cause the float is sticking. but Yea I remember you telling me that. im gonna go ahead and pull the motor on the 4dr and power wash it, repaint it and the firewall and front so its gonna be nice. the green car, I have no idea what we gonna do with it, Hope to recoupe some money back from buying it by parting some non usable parts off of it.
