The below thread has some good ideas to remove the vents.

I've changed them out on several cars. And yes, it is difficult. Here's a pic of the center vents to show the 4 screw locations. Hope this helps.

Yes these pics are helpful because they also show the screws that hold the frame on, which you want to remove to get the vents out. They face forward, so there is no question of removing them without getting the whole thing out

Found this on e-Bay.  GM part number 3979751 checks out for our gen cars.

Then, found this listing for new repros advertised for CK trucks. Notice the cross-reference to Mfg part number 3979751. Me thinks maybe there are repros for these, afterall.

Boy that NOS is already losing some chrome, isn't it?

When I was in the JY saturday I was looking for pre-80 trucks to compare them but we didn't have any. When Bill has said there were repros out there I searched and found the truck repros but the missing link was the part numbers. Good detective work!

I'm looking at the cost to paint mine black compared to the cost of rechroming. Now I might add this repro set to the cost comparison list. My car would need 4 chromed ones, or I could be like the 73 Laguna and keep driver's one black. Maybe I should go with red or something? (ha not likely) I'm guessing I will be going black.

I replaced my vents with ones I bought from The Parts Place #IN5862V
https://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/Home.aspx I drove down to the store near DeKalb IL and
compared them to my old ones, they were an exact match to my 73 even though it says 74-77
I bought all 3 for the passenger side of the dash. They are a little pricy at $39.99 each but they are very nice, and excellent quality. I know there are some Parts Place haters (that's why I drove down) but these parts are nice.

With that in mind, I suppose $81/3 vents isn't such a bad price. Gotta believe they are coming from the same manufacturer, anyway.

I don't know about 'hate' so much as they seem to be spotty on part quality/fitment. I've had decent luck with the outer window trim I bought from them a bunch of years back. Seems to depend on the part.

I painted all vents black, looking good. The most coolest thing I'm thinking of is to cover them with some black matte rubber paint like plastidip or something similar to look like modern car vents

Hey, I didn't even think about Plasti-Dip! I could go red just for a few weeks to scare my wife! Actually, she wouldn't care, I would be scaring myself mostly.

I plastidipped plastic dash insert to change color from blue to black but I think I didn't prep plastic carefully so in some places it peels off very easy. It was my first experience.
The only thing that is cool in this type of coating - it gives soft rubber feel when touching surface and it gives a surface slightly matte appearance instead of rude plastic look.
Of coarse I think modern cars interior panels are not plastidipped and are using another type of rubber coat. I didn't google for it and don't know if it's wide spread for private users.
