Any Roller rocker recomendations? Empty Any Roller rocker recomendations?

Post by 1975 S3 Fri Jan 24, 2020 7:38 pm

Hi folks, as some may know I rebuilt the engine in the Laguna last summer. 355, 10.5:1, cam, hydraulic lifters and rebuilt factory heads. It's working good but a few weeks before I put it away for the winter one of the rockers on the left bank started to tic, reset the lash and it was good. 2 days before putting it away one of the rockers on the right bank started to tic.

I'd like to install some roller rockers with locking nuts when I get it out six weeks from now to hopefully stop these nuts from loosening off, any recommendations?

P.S. I might go with a top end kit when the budget allows 2-3 yrs.

Thanks, Dave

Im running Scorpion Roller Rockers 1.5 ratio. Check out my build thread bottom of page 10 and then page 11. It discusses differences in the poly lock diameters that you have to watch out for.

If you like your setup currently, I'd just get a set of new nuts or a set of poly locks and keep your rockers. Just a thought.

Harland sharp rockers. Do your heads have guideplates already? Otherwise you need self aligning rockers.

I used Spedmaster roller rockers and comp cams adjustable guide plates. Have had good luck with the rockers so far and they are on the inexpensive side. Do you have screw in studs? If not, if the lock nuts are pretty tight I'd suspect studs pulling. I'd also crank the engine with the covers off and verify the pushrods spin when cranking.

I've been running Lunati for the past 12 years.

I'd have to agree with Flywheel, Unless you are using the in-correct nuts, they should not be loosening up, if in fact they are.

Yes, good point by Flywheel, more investigation needed. As far as the heads, they are the factory ones rebuilt.

Car comes out of storage in 3 weeks and goes straight to the shop, maybe it just needs the valve lash redone as it is a new motor.

One thing I didn't see you, or anyone else mention. Do you have screw in rocker studs? If they're stock heads they might have press in studs and they're coming loose. I had that had happen once when I was much younger. I put roller rockers and Z28 dual springs on my engine and was never told that I needed screw in stud to prevent the stud from pulling out.

Press in studs, looks like the new nuts solved the problem. If the problem returns then I'll look at a set of aftermarket heads with screw in studs. For now motors running great, oil is clean, and oil/coolant temp are good.
