Looking for those pesky 11" backing plates for the rear drum brakes. There are 9 1/2 " everywhere but no 11" I guess because the previous generation didn't use them. The few used ones I've seen were in lousy condition.

Also a non-corroded column stick shift lever. This is for a Non tilt column. Thanks

Most monte carlos have 11" rear brakes. If you column lever isnt too bad, Id soak it in white vinegar for a day or two then rinse it off. It will remove the rust. Not perfect but should be an improvement.

Oxalic acid is better. Should be able to order it online or through any compounding pharmacy. Both this and vinegar (acetic acid) are organic acids and work on rust without eating away at steel like muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) would. An old reliable is naval jelly which uses phosphoric acid as its active ingredient. It works well and is quicker than any organic acid but leaves a black phosphate coating which some opining is unappealing.

Is oxalic acid used in the same way as the vinegar? If not what is the application process? Are there any hazards to its use? Thanks

Pure oxalic acid is a powder and to use it, you must dissolve it in water.

A good detailed article can be found at https://azrust.com/oxalic-acid-for-rust-removal/.

I personally prefer to rinse a treated part with a mild sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution to neutralize any residual acid before I do a final rinse with very hot clean water. I say hot because that will heat the metal and allow it to try more quickly so as to prevent rust formation on your freshly de-rusted metal.

These were for 3-3/4" and 4" wide drums.

Furthermore, according to RockAuto:

CHEVROLET CHEVELLE — 1973
CHEVROLET EL CAMINO — 1973-1977
CHEVROLET LAGUNA — 1973-1976
CHEVROLET MALIBU — 1973-1977

But these were only for 3-3/4" wide drums.

By the way, looks like 1976 had unique rear baking plates:

18001257 - LH
18001258 - RH

For 1977 on, they were:

18002392
18002393

I looked in my parts manual and you are right. I give up. GM has defeated me again with nonsensical changes.

Not sure I understand why Montes have 3 3/4 and 4 inch wide drums. Also the repro 11 76-77 drums I've seen seem to be either 3 1/4 or 4 inch. Is the difference between 3 3/4 and 4 inch meaningful? In other words for the 76-77 Malibu do 4 inch wide drums fit?

I fished these out of my box-o-parts.

From my 73 Monte.

Am I measuring these correctly?

I can't see the picture very clearly but generally the backing plates are an inch or so wider than the drums. As best as I can tell those backing plates look sized for 9.5" brake drums

I have had these off the car for maybe 5+ years.

I have a "bolts" bin......I am sure they are muddled in there with the other 200 automotive bolts accumulated over the years.
I would not know where to start.
