I love my car. Empty I love my car.

Post by MichiganMuscle77 Tue Jun 01, 2010 9:00 pm

Those of us with 3rd generation A Bodies might be looked down on by the so-called muscle car crowd. We may not have much clout with the classic car enthusiasts either. But you know what? I love my car. It draws a ton of attention everywhere I go. People always stop me when I'm walking to it in a parking lot to tell me about how they had one like it and wish they'd never sold it. Young people, people my age ask me what it is and tell me they've never seen one before but think it's awesome.

I get so much positive feedback from people about my car, I just can't understand why these cars aren't as popular in the gear-head circles. My car is largely ignored at car shows by the other guys there with Camaros, Mustangs and Chargers, or even the people there who claim to be car enthusiasts. But the people who don't have some arrogant pretense on what makes a cool car, they love it. I never see people stopping to talk to the owner of a Camaro and share memories of them.. but that happens to me CONSTANTLY, especially at car shows, especially here in Lansing, MI where a lot of older guys built these. I actually had one old man approach me at a bank when i stopped to draw cash from the ATM.. he was pulling in just as i was pulling out. He said he was on the line when Oldsmobile sold a million of these, told me how it was such a great car and that he wished they still made cars with "soul" and "character". He looked like he had tears in his eyes.

What is it about these 3rd gen a-bodies that draw such warm reception from the general public, but causes car guys to shun us?

I don't get it.. but you know what, I'd almost prefer it this way rather than be part of some elitist snobbery club.

Because a lot of car guys go out and buy cars so they can hang out with people they think are cool. They get into a herd mentality, and have to be part of a group. Clique, if you will. Think of it as High School, you, me and most of the guys on this site are the dudes that used to hang out in the parking lot, smokin' and jokin', or we are the guys in the Physics club.
The Camaro, Chevelle Mustang guys etc, think they are the jocks. They are cool because they are "popular", and they crave attention from the crowd.
They will go out and spend ludicrous amounts of money to buy their way into the Jock's Club. Then they can sit around with the other cool guys, and talk about what a bunch of turds the rest of us are, and they can compete with each other to see who has matching # distributor caps.

Rolling Eyes

Trust me on this, I used to have mustangs, and a lot of those guys were looking for an image, not a hobby. It was pretty sad.
Some of them have those cars just because they want to fit in with a group and be admired.

Think about all of the accountants and school teachers that go out and buy a thirty thousand dollar Harley, and then ride around all weekend dressed up like somebody from the Village People trying to frighten old ladies into thinking they are tough, scary, biker dudes. OOOOOOOhhhhh.

It's trying to buy an image.

We've all talked about how boring the "Popular" are.
I went to a "Rat Rod" show this weekend and saw the coolest cars on earth thrown together for a few thousand bucks. Now those guys know what a hot rod is.

I used to have a 1967 Mustang, well, actually it said Falcon on the trunk, but it WAS a Mustang. Had the same V8 engine as a Mustang. JB

Well, you ain't a guy, at least that's your story Laughing
So then the question becomes:

A) Do you own a set of leather chaps, a red bandanna, or a leather vest with some skulls on it? Do you wear this outfit after removing your suit?

B) Do you have facial hair that you think is scary and intimidating, but still conforms with the office dress code? Like a porn stache ala Freddy Mercury?

C) Can you actually work on your bike, or do you take it to the shop and say, "The thingy is making this funny chirpy noise"?

D) Could you be any of the characters in "Wild Hogs"?

E) Do you ride down the road like you are the toughest guy on earth, but speed dial your brother-in-law attorney if someone threatens to kick you in the rump?

F) Do you have temporary body art, because your spouse won't let you get a real one?

G) Do you have a German military helmet, but you don't wear it because you paid more than $100 bucks for your "Hair Style"?

If you answered "Yes" to three or more of these questions, You ain't a real biker.

A) I have chaps, they are for safety and comfort, not style.
B) No facial hair, considering I am a woman.
C) My husband and I rebuilt my bike from the frame up, and when there is a problem, we fix it. Not the dealer. But since we did such a great job, we haven't had much to fix.
D) Yes, I could be the bartender chick in Wild Hogs.
E) How the heck do you talk on your phone with straight pipes???
F) I have a tattoo, my husband doesn't. Personal choice.
G) Why would I want a German Military helmet? So I can look like the A$$ in "Every Which Way But Loose?"

BTW, I am not a "biker," I am a motorcycle enthusiast. Razz

Exactly, you ride your bike because you like it, not because you are trying to be something you are not.
I have buddies who are enthusiasts, and two bud's who actually were in a nasty biker club.
I have known people in the first group who tried very hard to look and act like the second group. Silly.
I am referring to people who buy bikes or cars because they are trying to project an image and fit in with a particular group, not because they really have a passion for the ride.
These are some of the people who ridicule the G3s because they aren't Camaros etc.

I love third generation A Bodies, always have. It seems like the rest of the world is just catching up, that's all. I still have a cousin that won't own anything past 72, but I'm slowly changing his mind. He really digs the 73, at least that's ONE year newer.

I think our generation's downfall was a mix of

1)Emissions
2)Horsepower ratings change from Gross to Net
3)5 mph bumpers.

Some people still can't get over the gas crunch era (known as the muscle car "dark age" to some). Most of us are too young to have been there or grew up with these cars. The tides are turning & it's easy to see that our cars have REALLY kicked into the mainstream in the last couple of years.

I think one of the reasons they are coming back is because ppl in our "older" (haha) generation drove the cars as teens, and now that we are settled in life, we can afford the gas to keep filling the tank! I know I wouldn't have even thought of being able to afford that 10 years ago! These cars take time and money, and maybe we are all just able to get back to the things we know we want.
