My other automotive hobby

Post by 1973 Buick Century on Thu May 12, 2011 1:43 pm

I have been building scale models since I was about 3 or four years old. My first kit, a 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille by Johan. I still have it, it is just now in pieces waiting for it's restoration. Most of the cars and trucks I build are out of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, mostly or all stock. The cars you see here are hardly seen at hobby shows or contests. I go for the stock look, since not only is it a bit challenge since most company's produce muscle cars or products that cater to the masses but they are rarely built by modelers.

1977 Monte Carlo 1/25th my Revell/Mongram. It was sold under a low rider.

Chevy Nova 1/24 AMT. I removed the SS bages, added a "dealer installed" half top, IL 1979 plates, and bashed in the front clip. It will be a part of a diorama I am building (SLOOOOOOOLY).

1976 Chevy Caprice 1/24, not done yet, also wrong wheels.

1970 FoMoCo Galaxie 500 1/24 AMT. This was sold under as a police car. I added '69 style XL/LTD wheel covers and LOTS of chrome work.

1972 FoMoCo Galaxie 1/24th, resin kit. Added the chrome wheel trim, the wheel covers are from a van kit, and added white wall tires.

Here is another project I am working on. I love the TV show "The Rockford Files". The closest thing I could find to a Esprit Firebird was a Formula kit I won on Ebay 10-12 years ago for the grand total of $30. Not bad for a kit going for around $50 then. I realllllllllly did not want to open it but I have yet to find a Formula that is not a glue bomb or out of space price range. I also have the proper white wall tires James Garner used on his Firebird waiting in the box.

That Nova front end IS cool! See you've got a Cougar model kit in the background. I've got a real deal '67 XR7 sitting in the garage. Very hard to find die-cast or models of the '67.

Thank you everyone!

MC77: The '73 Cougar AMT kit is the latest repop of that mold. It has a molded in half vinyl top and brougham interior. Last kit in 1/24th or 1/25th scale till 1990/91 with Revell/Mongrams Cougar XR-7. Since my first car was a '78 Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee Edition, I collected models of it's sister car the Cougar. You are right, '67 Cougars are getting rare and are sought out by collectors. I have a deep metallic hunter green '68 in 1/18th scale by Sun Star. They do make a '67 also. May want to check on Ebay or a hobby site to find one. They make a lot of colors over time.

I remember I had the Monte with the garage, got it from K-Mart. I think they had a whole line of different cars you could get. I think there was a Buick Century, Merc Monarch, and I think a Lincoln too.

I know the 1/32nd scale Lindberg kits are hard to find overall.

Simply awesome.

Wish I could do models like that ... or have that type of patience, for that matter...lol.

A few years ago, an aftermarket resin company made a transplant kit for that Laguna kit to make it into a factory stock version of it. I have only seen one unbuilt kit. I have also seen someone take that stock car kit and make it into a factory stock replica. I can only wish my skills get that way in time!
