Who makes the best plastic paint?

Post by dcastine on Fri Sep 09, 2011 5:31 am

My 74 Laguna S3 with a burgundy interior needs some help. I'm looking to paint some misc "light blue" plastic parts to replace the worn out parts in the car - what paint/mfr make the right paint for this? Would that paint also be good for a "dash cap" ??

Thanks
Dave

I've used the Duplicolor cans on some vinyl trim pieces and plastic also with good results. Also check out SEM paints they also make prep products like a soap and adhesion promoter. I used this brand on my filthy steering wheel and was please w/ the outcome. I'm still playing around w/ both to see what color I'm going to end up with. SEM is mostly sold through specialty shops- Sanell auto parts in Salem NH stocks it and the other prep materials. Duplicolor is avail @ Advanced Auto parts. If all else fails, I've also played w/ the Krylon brand which is avail almost everywhere. Sanell can possibly match your stock color in a spray can (have no idea of price or minimum) but someone in Salem said they offer this service out of Manchester or Concord NH branches. Good luck.

Duplicolor-Flat Black for vinyl :-)

SEM would fall into the top one I would use, and a close very close second would be Duplicolor

I would NEVER EVER use Krylon ever again worst plastic paint I had ever used and only reason I did is the duplicolor was sold out and had to put some black on it, and now before final assy I have to redo all the panels I used Krylon on to get them to match

Is the Dupli-Color paint you guys speak of specifically for plastic? It's not there typical "touch up" rattle-can stuff is it?

Thanks
Dave

this is what I used with great results it looks very close to the original that came on car but use the flat black for the satin will give to much sheen it will look like a permanent armorall job

OH OH I forgot you have to put 2 coats of Adhesion promoter on as well LOL

I agree I done flat & it looks somewhat too flat for me, but it does work well as long as you prep your pieces properly. Gotta get them cleaned up with some dish soap, rinse with clean water, & dry prior to painting if you want it to last. Decent quality though & not like typical spray paint.

Thanks - I'm looking for the Burgundy paint for my S3's seat backs, upcoming dash cap, etc.

I wouldn't think flat would be good for these pieces?

you could use the perfect match vinyl dye then from duplicolor take a code for the interior or a very good picture of interior and match it to the can

I've used the Satin a couple of times on smaller trim pcs and it does look a little too shiny to suit my tastes. What I did, then, was wait until it dried and used some OOOO (Extra Fine) steel wool and lightly buffed some of the shine off until it looked like what I wanted.

Oooooooh - good idea.

Do most auto parts stores sell this type of paint?

My car won't be here for a couple weeks yet, so I'm doing my homework upfront.

Thanks for the education guys!

I ordered actual paint DYE for my interior, did the entire under-dash, the back of the bucket seats, and I have enough left over for the console and all interior trim pieces. I ordered it from Parasol.com in Canada. Shipping is like $35 so if you order from them, make sure you get enough. They have the prep spray, after-care conditioner, etc. It goes on best with an air compressor sprayer.

Stay away from the stuff called Fusion. It has a lot of problems. I think its made by Krylon, but not sure. JB

I did the whole interior plastic & misc vinyl of my '74 Malibu with paint & dye from NPD. Nothing for the seats, which has new PUI upholstery. Don't know what brand it is, but it's put in spray cans for them, as opposed to some off-the-shelf brands. The prep I used on the parts also came from NPD.
