73 Horn Help Empty 73 Horn Help

Post by JiMi_DRiX Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:51 pm

Hey everyone, I need a little help with the 73 Monte. The horn is not sounding. With every press of the horn pad, the relay clicks, and with a test light, I have power at the end of the horn wire. I've tried two horns, and still nothing. Unless I have two dead horns, what else could it be?

If you have power at the wire then I would check the ground. Maybe loosen the horn mounting bolt, clean under the bolt and put it back on. If you have power you need ground.

I took a little sand paper to the surface of the horn and the radiator support, but possibly I didnt get it enough. I'll also try cleaning the bolt threads on a wire wheel and see if it grounds better. I suspected that, but I dont know why the horn would have always worked before and then it not anymore. I dont think my dad has ever pulled it off the car. I will recheck and see tomorrow!

Easy enough to verify a bad ground...just run a lead from the battery (NEG post) direct to the horn to see if it will then work. While you're at it, run another lead from the POS battery post direct to the horn to verify the horn is functioning.

Well, seems as though the horn is no good. I have a pair of new horns on the 76. Im going to have to put one of those on it to test it out. Darn. Anyone have a nice original horn for a 73? They are different from the 76's original dual horns.

I have a single horn off of a 73 Laguna. Need cleaning up though.

The bracket needs to be painted, and the horn has factory overspray on it. Would probably come off with some paint thinner or mineral spirits.

Does it work and sound pretty good still 74MonteCarlo? I dont have any problem cleaning up and repainting any parts.

another question, this time going to my 76. It has the dual horns, brand new pair, but this car has a problem in the steering wheel or column where it makes contact. It could just be the horn pad since its a little tough to press, unlike the 73 that feels soft and new.. is there a way I can remove the horn pad, and ground that wire to set the horn off? I just need to know if its the pad that is no good, or if its that thing in the steering column..

My horn didn't work on my 77, turned out to be the lead wire in the column. $7.00 at NAPA. Part#BK 7353586.73 Horn Help Lead_w10

Mike I had 2 dead horns on my 73 . One went bad I went to the JY found another 73 Monte (not easy to do here) got a horn worked for a week and went bad. I have a cheap parts store horn on it now. THere is a guy that restores them ,search it I cant remeber his name but I think it was about 100 bucks. You can get brand new Delco's from a resto place that are about the same price.

Did you check the fuse @ the box or the little wire in the horn pad just in case?

I've since figured out the problem on both cars. The 73 needs a new horn, and the 76 had a dying relay. Where have you seen new Delco ones? My 76 has pair from OPG, and while they sound great, and look close to original, the brackets are kind of a pain because they only swivel, they dont have the "kink" in them like the originals. I guess I could make some if need be.

If I want to make my 73 into a dual horn car, I just need to modify the plug and add on like the factory dual setup is, correct? Id like to keep it single, for sake of originality, but the duals sound better.
