Have a 73 Grand Prix with the 400cid. Apparently someone who owned it before me changed out the point distributor and stuck an HEI on it. They also left the point gap at the recommended .040. Seems to me that the gap should have been widened and the plugs changed from the R45TS to the R45TSX with a .060 gap. Am I right in my assumption or is my little mind working overtime on B.S. Rolling Eyes

Yes, it should have a larger gap. What I would check is the power line going to the dizzy. A car that came with factory points has a resistor in its power line to the dizzy. Most guys just use it. But an HEI needs direct 12 volts with key on. I'd check to see if they ran a direct line from the fuse block or wherever.

Thanks. All they did apparently was cut the coil leads and splice them together. But now I think I'll run a new lead wire.
