Re: what rear end?
What would a 2.73 gear be usefull for? I have 3.08's and that would be enough why did gm put 2.73's in there?

Re: what rear end?
4k lb ugly boat of a grandpappy ride, gas crunch, tiny wheezing underpowered engines and primitive 1 to 1 transmissions with overdrive rolling in shortly. 2.73's were the answer to economy and highway cruising without tapping into expensive modifications from the factory.
Great to have a set bagged in the corner of the shop if you decide to take a long road trip!

I love my car and it's style, I think old rat rods look like junk along with most chevelle's prior to 73! My car will look awesome.

Re: what rear end?
I started over there brother.
If you haven't picked up on my attitude yet bro, I'll stop trying to help out.
I meant no offense to you or your ride, and have applauded you for your amazing efforts in the past.
Re read it and reconsider. One word was about the style of our cars. The other 3 lines described what a highway gear was good for and why it's in some of our big cars.

Re: what rear end?
My engine has around 600 feet of torque. I put 3.43 gears in the place of my 2.73s and kind of regret it. It did not help because I have so much torque but not that many RPMs for my redline. If you have the torque to turn those 2.73s they are fine unless you are strictly a drag racer with a high RPM redline. JB

Re: what rear end?
OK, I may have my head up my butt here...
I followed the procedure I found on this Olds site:
http://www.classicoldsmobile.com/tech/69.shtml
It's the same as noted above, but the tire turns 10 times, and you count how many times the driveshaft goes around.
Problem is, for 10 tire revolutions on my car, the driveshaft goes around a little more than 13 & a half. Which is about half of 2.73:1
I know I'm gonna feel dumb, but as we say in the radio biz, WTF, over.

Re: what rear end?
If you think its still got the original gears in it then theres a code on the passengers side axle tube. itll tell what gears are in it.

Re: what rear end?
too much trouble. youll have to cut all the brackets off and weld on your own. The 8.5" in your car is great. All you need is a posi and some gears and youll be good. They come with factory bolt in axles so thats something you won't need to worry about. Add an aluminum cover with girdle like the one on hydros and its as stong if not stronger than a 12 bolt.

Re: what rear end?
Some 10 bolt 8.5s came with even higher (lower numbers) rear gears than the 2.73. there were two center section housings and the 2.73 and lower (higher numbers) will take the bigger gears, but the other way will not take the bigger gears. JB
