Tail Panel Trim Empty Tail Panel Trim

Is there a way to remove the trim around the tail lights? The part with the Malibu Classic molded into it. Is there any reason they are on there other an aesthetics? If I can't remove it then I will probably paint them.

there are 3 metal tap screws on top of the chrome piece( each side ) on upper top and inside should be speed nuts on inner bolts
