Tires/rims
I realize this has been asked about before, but I guess I'm looking for my situation specific advice.
I recently ran across a craigslist deal on tires/rims (as my tires are getting real smooth, and can't find affordable whitewalls).
It's for some "brand-new" 215 15" tires already on rims. This would save me from having to pay to have the tires changed onto my current rims, and they're balanced which is a plus. I still would need an alignment though.
http://worcester.craigslist.org/pts/4569099696.html
I want to know if 215 is too thin of a tire for both front and back for our cars. I also want to know if it would look stupid, (I wouldn't want them to look lost in the huge wells) and how the staggering/change in size would affect performance.
I currently have 225/75R15s front and back.
I'd have to contact him fairly soon.
Thanks for your time, you guys are much more experienced than I am with this as I've never even bought tires before, haha.

Re: Tires/rims
A 215/ 70 /15 would be close to the OE size. While wider does look better, you'd be fine with these. Are you gonna spring for the Oldsmobile hubcaps?

Re: Tires/rims
First thing I would check is the DOT date code on EACH tire. If theyre more than 2-3 years old, I'd pass on them. You dont want old tires for safety reasons. Under DOT standards, you dont want to buy a NEW tire with a date code more than 4 years old.
If you buy a set new and they you know how there used and stored, then theyll be fine for a long time.

Re: Tires/rims
Looks as if he has two w/ the blackwall facing out & the other two with the letters. Whichever face you choose you'll have to re-balance the other pair if you want them to all look the same on all four corners. The size is ok but if you're running 15" rims, you're better off waiting a little or checking for a sale @ Town Fair Tire or a similar place up your way. Cooper tires are nice & often a bit cheaper than most good quality "name brands". Try BJ's wholesale club too if you're a member.

Discounttire.com free shipping and usually a rebate or gift card back to you.

Re: Tires/rims
Thanks for the input guys,
I will probably buy some baby moons for like $20 a piece, He didn't want to lower the price for the olds caps.
The main reason I like the CL ad is that they are already mounted on rims that will fit my car (they don't look bad either!) and I won't have to pay to get them mounted and balanced.
So it's either $300 and I have to go get them.
Or it's $360 ($90 a tire) new plus let's say $80+ for mounting/balancing.
That's quite a bit more.
PS: How'd the stance look?
After talking with him, he says that they have less than 500 miles on them. He'll tell me tommorow how wide the rim is. Hopefully it's 15x7.
And wow! I can't believe our cars had such tiny tires new! Haha.

Re: Tires/rims
I personally think they are a little too narrow. But if it's what you want then that's all
That matters. What makes you feel like you need an alignment? If your old tires wore down evenly and the car tracks straight then you are fine. Not sure if you are thinking you need an alignment every time you get tires.

Re: Tires/rims
I just don't want them to be unsafely narrow. And I actually do need an alignment as I recently (three months ago) got my centerlink and a tierod end replaced, and my car has been steering right since then. Hahah.

Re: Tires/rims
As John mentioned, 215/70's are pretty darn close to what came on these cars originally...and, they performed just fine for daily driving needs.

Love the tire and rim combo, glad to have done it. Still need a front end alignment, but it drives great and looks it too!

Re: Tires/rims
Nope, couldn't justify the $150 price tag and he wouldn't haggle. I'm looking at some 66 Nova poverty caps, and if that falls through then I'll get some baby moons.

They are off a '66 Nova, I'm incredibly impressed with their condition.

They look like they could have been factory original. Good pick!
