the 383 would probably be better. The cars weigh enough already, dont add anymore with a 400+ lol.

I dont think a 400 weighs anymore than a 383. I doubt theres a 10 pound difference.

A 400 is a small block, least ways the 400 under discussion here is. The 400 sb has several disadvantages as well as one big advantage. The 400 is considered a big bore engine while the 383 is considered a big stroke engine. The differance is a big bore will let a small body car rev up real fast, all other things being the same, and outrun a 383, especially on the top end. A big stroke engine will help a big body car have more torque to move that big body in the slow and mid ranges, but will not rev as fast or rev more on the top end. The 400 engine has a minor disadvantage because it has siamized cylinders and as long as an engine is running correctly it makes no differance, but if the engine has anything wrong with it to increase the chance of overheating it becomes something to be careful about. The 400 also needs steam holes in the heads to help with even heat distrobution and you have to be careful not to let your water passages get gummed up for ny reason. Do NOT listen to the people who tell you steam holes are not nessessary! JB

509 or 511 400 blocks are your best bet to modify. They are a little more beefier and dont have the problem with the main bolts making stress cracks up through the block eventually leading to engine failure.

400 is my choice.

Small blocks can be built with awesome power, so I have no problems running one. I souped up the 350 in my 73 nearly 20 years ago and even with 2.73 gears and that huge body, that car would simply fly. I've always thought a 383 would be a cool build, too. I have no problems putting a built big block in our cars either, however!

I will say it again "a 400 IS a small block". Everything, well most things, will interchange between a 350 and a 400. JB
