Cold Air Intake Fender Empty Cold Air Intake Fender

Post by g3chevy / Mr Pontiac Tue Oct 11, 2016 9:57 pm

Has anyone noticed a stamped outlet on the passenger side fender? It appears that from the factory manual that this was intended for a cold air intake behind the headlight. My 1975 SS El Camino with factory 454 has this type of fender but my 75 Laguna does not. Nor does any of the extra fenders I have in storage. Attached are pics of the fender I removed for restoration and a picture of the page in the factory manual that shows this setup.

Thats really cool. Never seen that before. Looks like it would be real easy to duplicate on the opposite fender for a dual snorkel setup.

I grabbed a right fender off of a 74 Chevelle years ago from a junkyard to replace the fender on my 76 Laguna. It had that opening, I figured it was for an intake vent of some sort, that car didn't have the ducting, who knows if it ever even did. Cool to know for sure that's what it is for, always wondered.

Interesting. I've been contemplating some sort of cold air intake setup, and I hadn't thought of pulling it from there.

There has to be some cars lying in a junk yard somewhere with that setup.

That is some interesting info. They all seem to have the recessed area (even my Monte has it), but don't believe I've ever seen one cut out. Then again, I've never really paid much attention. But, why would GM consider pulling outside air in from behind a headlight housing? Wouldn't that have been restrictive?

I looked and it seems the Air deflected under Car By the Factory chin spoiler Is Pushed up into the area And Maybe it grabs it That way I may still Look into Other options for my Vacuum cleaner attachment aka Air Cleaner..... I might just route them to go in the core support like Planned

I have had alot of elcaminos and malibu of every year from 73-77, and i have not ever seen a fender with that cutout. Im Real curious as to wether any cars ever left the factory with that setup. Or If they only planned it and later cancelled it. I have parter out severel and owned even more and never seen anything remotely like it.

What you need to do, Anthony, is remove one of those headlights on each side and modify it as was done on the '64Ford Thunderbolts...lol!
