My steering wheel needs to be cleaned, or painted. Not sure what to clean it with, and also not sure that paint, the stuff for vinyl would work on it. Anyone had this issue ?

Yes, we all have at one time or another. You may have two identical steering wheels, one is sticky and one is not. You can clean it with acetone or several wipes with rubbing alcohol. Open up the pores real good and then use SEM product vinyl dye-several light coats -it covers well and I have found the best on the market. It is made in Charlotte NC-you will be happy with the results, I am doing my el Camino MOnday morning in Landau Black-the interior was originally black anyway but want to re-do. On the back of all the panels I use a Krylon Pastic paint. hope this helps-Mitch

Everything I've read is that, even if you can clean the sticky gunk off your strg wheel, it's only temporary. The plasticizers in the vinyl material are actually breaking down and leaching out. If that is the case, I can't imagine a repaint would make for lasting results, either.

Yep ... & agreed about the painting.

Had that happen to a few steering wheels ... & cleaning only helped temporarily.

Here's another view of my steering wheel and shifter Mcarlo77. It sure does fool a lot of people. haha
I did the soak it hot water and scrub the heck out of it Dawn dish soap trick first. It came out "OK" but it still had a little sticky feeling to it. I also didn't like how the wheel felt on the small size, so  I wrapped it and love how it feels now.
