I'm compiling info to start my S3 summer project and need to know what vehicles to raid in the junkyard to replace the wimpy 2-series carrier with a 3-series so I can install 3.42 or 3.73 gears.I could not find carrier interchange info doing a search here.Thanx.

What gears are in it right now? Is your a posi or a one leg? Some 2 series carriers can be used with those gears you want. You can either put the spacer behind the gear like Mr. Gasket makes. Or you can get the gears that have the thick flange already build into the rear of the gear. Then it just bolts in.

Thanks! The gears are the original factory 2.56 open differential.I did not know there were thicker gears/built-in flange available for a series2 carrier.I REALLY LIKE that idea better than a spacer or robbing the guts out of the 73 mali.Where can I find these things?I'll have to check into it for sure.

I'm not interested in a spacer but really curious about the thicker gears/built-in flange?

The rear isnt really wimpy at all. The 8.5 ten bolt is very strong and can be built as strong as a 12 bolt. The spacer works good, unless you are putting a lot of power to it -ALOT,it should be fine.

I installed a powertrax locker in my chevelle. It was a very easy install and works great but...it is kind of noisy. I already had Richmond 373 gears installed and the powertrax was a easy diy "posi" upgrade. It did cost $500.00 though.

It looks like my budget strategy is going to be a junkyard crawl to find a 3-series posi carrier to replace the existing carrier.I have a powertrax no-slip but its reserved for my 73.Anyone know of an online interchange chart for 73-77 8.5" 10-bolt GM rears? Thanks for everyones patience.

The way I understand it is that 2.56 and up will fit in same case and less than 2.56 will not fit. That is what I always heard. JB

Might be until the last ones in 96. Do some research maybe search part # on Rockauto.com try to cross part # from say your own car to one of them. I think some had the 7.5 rear -you dont want that. But I would bet the wagon has an 8.5. Try on here, search around http://www.impalassforum.com/

Monte SS is an 8.5 and usually has 3.73 stock. Buick GN usually have 3.42 stock. Both should be posi's. Dont rule out GM 1/2 ton trucks up to 99. Most of them have their option code sticker in the glove box. If you find the G80 code, thats a posi. Search the net and print out the list of other "G" codes which will tell you what gear ratio is in the rear. Will be something like GU4, GU5 or GT4 or GT5. Just looking for the "G"'s.
