custom parts building Empty custom parts building

Post by driveit Sat May 04, 2013 8:17 am

Thinking about building center console and a few other parts from scratch. Looking for ideas on how to build them. I have been thinking about framing it up in plywood, but want to make the car lighter, not add weight. I was thinking maybe of using Fiberglass, but I am not sure where to start.

Has anyone done this or have any tips?

Thanks and God bless,
Chris

1/4" cabinet grade plywood works best. Its light weight and you can use any type of fastening you want with it. Glue it screw it staple it. Get your shape all done then fiber glass matt over it if you want to paint it. Or wrap it in vinyl its endless.

I start with chip board and just tape them together as its cheap and gives you a template for the ply wood. i[url=[url=https://servimg.com/view/17248508/206]custom parts building Img_3811

Then cut out pieces and add a strip of 3/4" soft maple wood for corner blocks to screw or fasten together. Some 1/4" closed cell foam and leather and your done. You can use construction adhesive as well. Very easy to cut dome light holes or any thing else you want to add on or in it.

The red section is just ABS plastic painted to match car. It lifts out so i have access to two extra fuse panels under console. I have a lot of wires under there as it has seat heaters, power lumbar and side lumbar in the seats. Plus stereo wires and cross overs for speaker and cup holders. The black wire hanging out and small black box is remote for subs gain control. I just toss it in went I get to were I'm going.

Here is before seat where done

After seats still not happy with the way they came out but they are ok for now.
