Re: How many
According to records, there were 153,899 total Grand Prix's made in 1973. The "J" model was on 133,150 of them, and out of those there were 9,812 made with the 455. The model "SJ" which came with the 455 as part of the option and made up 20,749 units. So together the "S" models with a 455 and the "SJ" with 455's total 30,561 units. Not rare at all, but it's hard to find a good one left these days. Good Luck!

Re: How many
Wow! My eyes are getting bad! Sorry about that. I have looked at all the Pontiac sites and my books and there is no breakdown for how many 455's were installed. Only that it was available, and we already knew that. Maybe PHS can come up with a number, they can tell you what your car had on it when new, but I don't know if they have total numbers on specifics like that. I found the Grand Prix info easily, but the only thing on GA's is two door and four door totals and the estimate on how many four speeds(187) were made. No mention of 7.4 vrs. 6.5 litre engine totals that I can find. I can say they were not uncommon back in the day, as I used to see quite a few. Today, who knows though...

Re: How many
Check the Vin # to confirm it's a "real" 455. For 1973 the 5th digit s/b one of these:
W= 455 4 Bar. Carb., Single Exh.
X= 455 4 Bar. Carb., Perf. SD (no SD 455 G/A was ever released to the public- the 1 they built was crushed by Pontiac- but hey you never really know.)
Y= 455 4 Bar. Carb., Dual Exh.
If you can read the number on the engine block pad still- the letter will be in that mix somewhere & would at least indicate a "numbers match".
As far as actual production numbers...I agree check with Pontiac Historical Services.
