Headlight Hardware Qs? Empty Headlight Hardware Qs?

Post by 76 Malibu Mon Jun 15, 2015 11:54 am

I am going to try and convert my '76 Malibu from stacked lights to single this summer as long as I can get the bodywork done on the new parts.  I have used headlight buckets from a 1974 Malibu.  They are in good shape, but one of the headlight retaining rings is damaged.

Anyone know a good source for one?  I also need to replace all adjustment hardware, any good source for that?

Anyone know a decent round headlamp upgrade that will give more light than stock?

OPGI has the retaining rings and I think the hardware, and any newer Headlamp is better than 38 year old light bulbs

Check eBay for headlight upgrade. Just remember you get what you pay for.

Does anyone have a used ring they are willing to sell. The shipping and exchange to Canada is expensive on the OPG part.

Any recommendations on the type of lights? I don't want some cheap off shore junk.

I use the Sylvania Silverstar lamps. They are readily available and I think they have a good light output.

I have the Silver Star lamps in my Elco project. They should at least be an improvement over halogens...

Does anyone know what other cars used the same headlight ring as the 1973-1975 Chevelles? And to the Lagunas take the same as non-Laguna cars? I seen some listings only for Lagunas.  It seems they are also different from the 1971-72 cars for some reason.

I don't see why they wont work on the Laguna to the Chevelle its the same size bulb only difference would be the chrome Surround piece ( not the actual headlight ring ) AndSingle headlight cars went to 76 Maybe even 77 They were Base Model Malibu's Not Malibu Classic's

Looking around at Ecklers site it looks like they have the same listing for the 1973-75 Chevelles and the 1976+ Camaros. They list the same OEM part number for both cars, although they list two different prices for each. Then NPD lists that the 1973-77 Chevelles use the same ring as the early Camaros and 1971-72 Chevelles.

My ring I have is in good shape, other than the one tab is missing...

Yeah, I thought the same thing until I tried using ones from a 70-72 Monte. They were twice as tall as my originals. The light's the same, but the bucket isn't.

Hay - give me till tonight, I'm in London Ontario, and might have a third one that came with the '75 Laguna nose I bought last year, no duty, no exchange, maybe even pick it up if you're close.

Right.  70-72 Monte headlight retaining ring is taller (from the side) than the 73-75 Monte one.  Nearly double.  Since the headlight's the same, it must be because of the design of the bucket.  Using the 73-75 bucket with the 70-72 ring will result in a light that rattles around like Cookie Monster's eyeballs.   Therefore I wouldn't trust any 7" ring from any vehicle other than a 73-75 A-body unless someone's actually measured it.

As far as the headlight ring goes, I know that the one for these G3's are a bit odd. I bought a universal fit one that had a whole bunch of tabs on it. No matter what, one 2 or the three would work! It definitely seems for whatever reason GM changed the design on these headlight rings.

Tony - Sorry to say I found the third ring but it only has 1 of 3 tabs on it, and that one tab isn't whole either.

For future reference, the headlight rings for the 1973-77 Chevelles with 7" round lights is:

GM part #5964574

From doing some checking, it looks like these were also used on the following cars:

1976 - 81 Camaro
1975 - 79 Nova
1973 - 1980 Chev Trucks

Earlier rings are different.
