where to get good pilot bushing?
I'm replacing the clutch in my 350/ Saginaw 4 speed car. My
NAPA kit included a pilot bushing that unfortunately is cheap Chinese and is very magnetic. Where can I get a good bronze pilot bushing?

Re: where to get good pilot bushing?
I usually get my 4 speed internals from jodys transmissions.com He is in Pennsylvania. Got my last muncie kit from him. Excellent guy to deal with. http://www.jodystransmissions.com/
Another excellent guy to deal with is 5speeds.com
You will get quality parts from either of those companies.
As for local parts,
Is the napa one you got this part number ?? Napa BK 6151161 should be what you need. I've read this one is non magnetic.
I've heard that Advance Auto Parts carries Federal-Mogul pilot bushings and they are non magnetic and made in the USA. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/national-bushing-pb-656-hd/3278085-P
I've heard this is a good part number as well. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/BCA0/PB656HD.oap?pt=C2325&ppt=C0015
For the advance and oreilly part numbers, make sure what you get has the HD at the end of the part number.
And just fyi, the tapered side of the bushing goes towards the tranny.
And the bushing goes in flush in the hole.
Easy way to get the old one out is to thread a long bolt in the hole. It will press against the crank and the bushing will ride up the threads and out of the hole. Make sure your bolt has enough threads.
Try your new bushing on the tip of your trans before install. Because the hole will get smaller when pressed into the crank. Also check the "OD" of the bushing and the ID of the crank. You only want a couple thousandths interference. To much interference and the hole will tighten up and make it hard to get the trans in and then once in, sometimes hard shifting.
And to further eliminate any chances of chatter, DIAL-IN the bellhousing. Makes for smooth operation of the clutch and takes wear and tear off the input bearing on the trans. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=659650
And there you go. Any other questions, just post up.

Re: where to get good pilot bushing?
Thanks Joe great info I'll check those part numbers. Quick thought: my NAPA kit came with also a skinnier, larger diameter bushing that is not magnetic. The one I pulled out of the crank was the smaller OD and fit inside the deep recess in thr crank.

Re: where to get good pilot bushing?
Sorry Joe, I just realized you gave me the pilot bushing NAPA number, what I just posted was the kit number. i'll call NAPA and see if they can get your number. Also, for comparison, attached is a photo. Old bushing on left, new correct size NAPA bushing in middle but is magnetic, then incorrect size bushing also from the NAPA kit on the right, which is non-magnetic.

Re: where to get good pilot bushing?
I wonder what the one on the right is for. Its pretty big, kind of looks like a washer or something. Usually when you look at a pilot bushing and it kind of has a "lead" color to it, its usually magnetic.
Remember the HD on the end of the part number.
Good luck

Re: where to get good pilot bushing?
Well NAPA no longer has that part number my store says for 10 years. They carry a Dorman part number now that is magnetic. I went to Advance next and asked for the HD part number you gave. It's at another store and I had the other store verify non magnetic and they said it's not, so I'll pick that up later today, yay!. Thanks Joe!
