how can i remove paint from interior pieces? Empty how can i remove paint from interior pieces?

Post by 455GA Tue Apr 19, 2016 12:00 am

ok some time in my cars past some one had the bright idea to paint over the white interior pieces with what i think is black spray paint. it is not dye.

well it;s starting o flake off and just looks horrible is there a way i can remove it with out damaging the plastic or vinyl?

the interior parts are not in the best of shape to begin with but the Grand AM specific parts i would like to try and save as trying to find replacements is proving to be impossible

also on the subject are small opera window sail panels interchangeable? can i get some from a malibu?

here is a picture of the horrible painted interior pieces

Only two ways to remove paint that I know of...and, that is to either sand or use chemicals. Sanding plastic pcs will remove any surface texture and I'd bet anything chemicals will soften the plastic. Not sure about vinyl. I'd highly recommend finding whatever replacement plastic pcs you can. I will advise you that, if you were planning on getting back to a white interior, finding white interior plastic IS impossible...for any of our cars. It was the least resistant to UV and the first to crumble. That's based on my digging thru dozens upons dozens of "A" bodies while coming up with a grand total of two coat hooks worth saving.

Yes...those small window sail panels are interchangeable with Malibus. So are kick panels and the rest of the upper headliner plastic pcs. and "A" pillars. I think I still have a some of these pcs. Let me know what you're in need of and I'll check.

As strange as it sounds have you tried to soak the parts in Pine Sol. My dad had a lot of model cars he built in the 60's. We soaked them in Pine Sol and stripped them back to white plastic. I do not know if it works on all paint types. We used a tooth brush once the paint started to soften up. On purpose I left one junk model in the cleaner for a long time. It will soften the plastic, so you have to watch it closely. We also found out that the off brands of the cleaner did not work, it had to be the Pine Sol brand.

I'm going through this now as well. I've read soaking them in Simple Green will work as well as putting some brake fluid on them. I am going to try the Simple Green route once I find a big enough container to store the plastic pieces in.

If u have a dollar tree store by you get some AWESOME cleaner. Its supposed to remove dry paint and it's only a buck for 32 oz. Concentrate. Also great for removing black streaks on campers and mold mildew on boat seats.

Guess anything is worth a try. I do see where it could be possible to remove paint from a solid, smooth plastic like on model cars. But, these pcs are textured and the white plastic is undoubtedly chalky and dry rotted underneath the paint. I still stand by my recommendation to replace whatever pcs you can find. The hunyuck who owned my Laguna prior had done the same thing...painted black over dry rotted tan...with the same results. Even the swivel bucket seat backs. It all had to go.

Or you could try scuffing with scotch brite pads and re-dying everything white, until you can find replacements.

No need to measure anything. Just check the part number molded into the back. Malibu and small window Grand Am/Lemans Sport will have #9735914 (RH) and #9735915 (LH).
