Anybody know what this is called
Finally got around to finishing up the stuff I was doing on the monte. Changed the belts and flushed the coolant and notice this thing that sets on top of the housing is broken. Took it to the ports store and they have no clue what to call it or where to get one. I figure if anyone will know, you guys will. Thanks....

Thanks Limey. One more question for you. Do you think it will be alright like that, or should I try to locate a new one?

Re: Anybody know what this is called
It's actually called the ported vacuum switch . It's part of the emission system. If you ask for a temp sender, you'll get something with a wire connection on it and not one for vacuum lines.

Fasrnur is right. I think it's officially called a TVS, or thermo vacuum switch. I think it keeps the EGR from functioning until the car warms up. If you aren't running an EGR, just plug it with a pipe plug.

Re: Anybody know what this is called

Technically, GM calls it an "Exhaust Heat Actuator Vacuum Control Switch". EGR operated switch looks the same...but, is mounted on top of the intake manifold. Anyway, lower port vacuum hose goes to Heat Riser and Upper port hose goes to carb vacuum. If you are planning on replacing it, make sure you get one that is normally "Open" when cool in order to pull vacuum with a cold engine and then "Closes" when heated. Some TVS's are just the opposite and are "Closed" until heat opens them up. I believe the EGR switch is one of those.

My '77 GM Illustrated Parts Manual shows these switches on the schematics...but, fails to give a part number. I found a couple used ones off Chevys in the JY that tested ok but, there are no meaningful numbers on either for reference.

The only numbers I can find on this one is HRD6.

Re: Anybody know what this is called
Yeah...that's what this one I have says on it. However, I think I found the correct GM part number. The schematics in the manual reference a separate page number where the part numbers are identified. After some digging, they appear to have misprinted the location of the part number. Anyway, it would be GM #3031386. Also, the part number for the EGR switch would be #3031385 (350 engine) and #3036912 (305 engine). Hope this helps.
