73-77 Chevelle VIN & Body Tag codes

I'm compiling information I've gathered up for all years of G3 Chevelles. For now I'm posting up some info on VIN numbers, body tags, engine codes, color codes, & vinyl top codes but be patient because I've also found specific engine specs with included codes, option codes broke down by year, chassis features (like tire sizes, etc.), production notes, option installation rates, & even historical tidbits. As you can see this is gonna take me a while, so bear with me.

You forgot about candian made cars. I was the first on to find something wrong with the "Chevrolet By Numbers" book. The canadian number wasnt right in it.

I actually have a different book titled "Standard Catalog of Chevelle 1964-1987". Too bad it doesn't list Canadian cars though. As far as US models, there is almost everything you would want to know in it.

Good idea on making this a sticky- Good stuff for future originality references for guys that want to go that way with their cars.
I have some pix from another site that i will be using for factory stickers and locations. If anybody needs 'em, or to post them up here, i can shoot them out email-
Might be a good idea to start collecting that sort of stuff for all of the G3 cars and making this site the Go-To reference point for restorations.

It seems we have an issue with the 1977 VIN codes.

5th Symbol - engine

One source says this:
D=250-cid 110-hp inline six cylinder
Q=305-cid 145-hp V-8
V=350-cid 170-hp V-8

another says this:
D=250-cid 110-hp inline six cylinder
U=305-cid 145-hp V-8
L=350-cid 170-hp V-8

Looking for some 77 owners to chime in here. I know that the code U 305 is correct, how about verifying codes Q, L, & V?

Here's one for the '76 paint codes, 01, DuPont lists it as 'Special Order Blue' It's a sky blue/Powder blue. My '76 had that and I've only seen about 6 75-76 cars in 34 years that color. It had never been completely repainted, except after Mom got hit in it, that just damaged a headlight bucket and the passenger fender.

Mom and Dad were the only owners of it from 12 miles to 199,558 and 24 years, so I know it had never been in any other wrecks or any paint work.

It does not show up on any other documentation, but that was what was on my cowl tag, I still have it somewhere. Made for fun trying to find touch-up paint. Furd was too white and Chrysler was too blue.

Q is correct for '76 140hp/250tq 305. U is correct for '77 145hp/245tq 305.

how can you tell if a 1973 SS is an SS?

Build sheet. Thats about it.

This makes me wanna look for my build sheet. Where all should I look? I've found them under the seats and above the gas tank before but I've heard of them being almost anywhere. Anybody know the best place to start on a 77 Malibu Classic? Thanks in advance!

Different plants put them in different places, even different people on the assembly line threw them where ever they felt. Also check inside doors, behind the dash.
