Indy looks for Blazer
Today I'm going to go look at a 2 door 4-wheel drive blazer. I have plans for it if it's in good shape.

Thanks. Hopefully this won't turn out like the two or three damn POS Rivieras I looked at did. If you're wondering what I want to do with one, Google search "all wheel drive blazer". Some pretty neat stuff comes up.

Re: Indy looks for Blazer
Ok! So I bought a Blazer. It's a '94 2wd 2-door. Not quite what I was after originally, but this one was way too nice for me to pass up. I'll post pics tomorrow afternoon.

Sweet! I've always been a fan of the S series trucks. Not bad on gas & the 4.3's have plenty of power to toss around. It it the CPI or TBI version?

Re: Indy looks for Blazer
It's the CPI version. It's supposed to be the most "powerful" of all the factory 4.3 (special vehicles excluded), somewhere around 230 horsepower from the literature, and it is fairly quick for what it is. I can't vouch for how much power it actually makes, but I think that eventually I'm gonna start doing some work to the engine to see what I can do with it. If it's good enough I'll ignore a v8 swap for now.

I want a cpi engine! but im gonna run a throttle body. The motor I ended up with is the 1986 4.3L

Re: Indy looks for Blazer
It's good enough. Factory hp is actually 210 & it is the most powerful 4.3L to my knowledge. Here's my advice from personal experience.
1)Take off the upper intake & replace the nut kit, spider injection, & regulator. Thank me now instead of worrying about it later on down the road when it just starts spewing gas in there & floods out. While the upper intake is off, take a dremel & clean up all of the casting flash. You'll be amazed at how bad it is & what a difference it can make. Noticed better fuel economy & throttle response.
2)Also while the upper intake is off, make or buy an EGR restrictor. I hear that the block off is a bad idea, but a restrictor won't send any codes & will help your motor run better. Fuel will burn more evenly with it installed. Clean the EGR to get rid of the deposits. Noticed more power, especially down low.
3)Get rid of the cat. Find a place willing to do this for you, but I had a complete new 2 1/2" single exhaust ran from the manifolds back with no cat & a turbo muffler. In hindsight, I should have used a straight through muffler for more power, but this was probably the most noticeable improvement.
4)K&N filter. There are no custom intakes for the CPI motor, but Autozone used to sell a chrome pipe that went onto the throttle body & replaced the accordion hose. Never got around to switching out that piece, but I could imagine a small improvement especially with the new filter.
5)Upgrade the ignition. I jumped to Accel for the cap, rotor, & coil. Added some Taylor wires & new plugs. I noticed a big improvement, but my old stuff was shot. Probably minimal gains here, but fresh electronics will ensure a solid running vehicle.
6)Set your timing. Yeah these are controlled by the computer, but there's a way around it. Disconnect the tan/black wire inside truck under the heater casing under the dash. Supposed to be at 0 deg, but play with it a little & see if it can take some advance. Bump it up a little, plug the wire back in & take it for a drive.
This is all that I done to mine & I regularly beat on 350 powered trucks. The look of guys' faces when a V6 4wd smoked them was priceless. Not to mention I had plenty of power to smoke the Interco's. My next upgrade would have been a small cam & roller rockers. I think I would have called it good there. If you look around the net, some company does or did sell a custom supercharger kit for around $2,100 if you really need more power.

Re: Indy looks for Blazer
Hey, look! Some jerk brought this thread back!
So now that this Blazer is somewhat presentable, I got pics! It was lowered a couple inches when I got it, but I replaced the shocks and got rid of the rear aluminum lowering blocks. They damn near crumbled in my hand when I pulled them out
. Even better was the brakes...the fronts had a 1/2 inch wide/ 1/4 inch deep gouge in them that keyed into the brake pads, so the whole front end brake system was replaced. The rear shoes were destroyed and the passenger rear emergency brake cable was shot. That guy was driving his family around in that car
. It also came with a set of steel spare wheels on all corners, so I replaced them with a set of newer GMC aluminum wheels ($100 for all 4 with hubcaps!!!).
Eventually, it will be getting a v8. I'd really like a 5.3 LS style engine, but a TPI 350 would also be cool. The interior also needs to be redone. I recovered the headliner the other week, so it's gonna last for a little while. Next up is a set of decent seats. I'm debating a set of Cobalt seats since they're much nicer and practically bolt right up to the S10 seat frames. I just have no idea what to do about the rear seat since the cover is crap and the frame is kinda bent. The body needs a few things to, like a front bumper and grill. I also need a rear bumper assembly since it's only got a roll pan. Safe, I know.

Hmm. That's odd. Of course, they work for me, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Re: Indy looks for Blazer
Man I love S10's almost as much as I love my 76. Simple, cheap, & easy to work on (except changing the rear spark plugs, lol). Just wish my current one wasn't a 2wd extended cab 2.8 auto. Three out of the four I could live with, but all combined into one package really leaves me wishing it had a 4.3 or V8.
I want my blue one back:
