Dist issues.
need some feed back. granted i am a buick guy, but tuning is tuning. previous distributor in my engine had no solid wear mark on the dist gear. also the gear itself looked and felt slightly filed down. as far as wear pattern, none. past experience, most all dist gear wear pattern has been dead nuts in the center. also there was no up and down play is dist. rather hard to rotate by hand. junk dist. duh. heres my "issue". planning on just upgrading to HEI and be done. however, since the funky wear pattern on dist gear, what are chances of that screwing up cam gear?? changed oil, no noticeably metal flakes, average oil pressure. ran good. was VERY inconsistant when you dropped a gear. should i be worried about cam gear?? cam is a comps cam. i beleive they are harded.

Re: Dist issues.
Was the dist in there stock or some after market item? It could be that it was in there too far and needed a shim (MSD makes them). I think Ive seen an article someplace how to do that, maybe search dist shimming or check MSD website but I know it sometimes needs to be done.

Re: Dist issues.
dist was a autozone stock points style replacment, with a points eliminator kit from accel. same with the HEI i am putting in. stock, with a curve kit. my worry is the cam. as i said, ran good.

Re: Dist issues.
My understanding is that the only time you need to worry about the dist gear is when you are running a late model steel roller cam, which requires a bronze dist gear.

I talked to my buddy and he said use the bronze gear he said you might take a close look at the dist though and make sure its true. He uses an MSD dist in his 455 with a bronze gear and hasnt had this problem .He said to sign up on th V8 Buick board there lots of info there and you might find a similar problem
