Hood weight question
Anyone know what the weight of the factory hoods are for our Chevelles?
Anyone got a weight of a Fiberglass Repro w/ the small cowl (2" maybe?)?

I have the VFN 2" and it says 13 pounds on website but I would say street use hood with the low tension springs bring it to 18 maybe nineteen pounds .....The original steel hood I would estimate at 58 Pounds

Re: Hood weight question
Thanks!
Where did U get the glass one? I've seen them price wise running from $300-$450. Don't know if it's just thickness affecting the price? Do you like yours or do you think it's flimsy?

Re: Hood weight question
No I like it alot I got mine very cheap local off ebay you will hate me if I told you what I ended up paying but lets just say I had about as much cost as I did hood cost picking it up LOL
It is a VFN hood and I love the fit and quality, could have a little thicker on the bulge but I can do that in house here before I start running it on the SE

Re: Hood weight question
I've been working on the hood for my Elco. I think I'll weigh it before I bolt it back on. May be interesting to see how much it actually weighs. I know it's hard to handle alone.

Re: Hood weight question
I haven't weighed it yet.....I have to wait until someone is around to help me lift it & set it on the scales. But I WILL weigh it.
I did weigh one of the doors though, and it went 115 lbs without the inside door panel./arm rest etc
Luckily a friend has a door hanging rack with casters on it, that makes it easy to bolt it on the body.

That falls in line with my scale that read about 118 lbs with the interior door panel. All I know is they weigh a ton and are very hard to move around by yourself. Did this friend of yours make the door hanging rack? Might be interested in knowing more about it for my project.

Re: Hood weight question
my buddy and I learned to use an engine hoist on his 84 Monte doors. I imagine my 4 doors weigh a bit less each than a the coupe doors.

Re: Hood weight question
I used an engine hoist to remove the doors. I would think that if the door is balanced OK, that a hoist would work to bolt them back on too.
The door hoist I used was a body shop item, and I don't know where my buddy got it. I'll ask when I see him.

Re: Hood weight question
19 pounds for the Bolt on 2" cowl hood and about 46 or 47 for the Steel Hood

Re: Hood weight question
Thanks Limey
I guess I figured it would weigh more. Likely because it's awkward to handle. The light weight glass hood sounds like I should look into getting one in the future, to take some weight off of the front end.

Re: Hood weight question
Well that answers that! TY Limey- Sure felt heavier than 47. So the hood minus the doors in all fiberglass will get you about 250 lbs lighter.
