TH200 in 1976? Empty TH200 in 1976?

Post by jupiter8 Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:44 am

Hello. I am possibly going to buy a 1976 Malibu. The car has a 305 and an automatic transmission. At some point I would probably want to upgrade the engine for more power or go with a crate motor. My question is whether the TH200 was available in the car or if it is a TH350. The owner doesn't know and i'm 2.5 hours away, so running over to check on it isn't going to be easy. I searched to see if that transmission was available in the Malibu but haven't found anything that says it was. I did see that it was available in the Novas with the 305 though. If it is a TH200 and is something that may have to be replaced eventually when the upgrade happens, it may be a deal breaker for me. Being that the Malibu's are heavier, I could see that they would have gotten the TH350 but I don't know.

More likely to be a 350th unless someone changed over the course of time

The TH200 was a 3 speed used in the small cars between 76-79. It was never paired with a V8. You can identify it by counting the number of pan bolts (11).

Note that the TH200 is not the same as a TH200-4R, which is a different animal entirely. That was a 4-speed unit.

Thanks for the responses guys. As I was Googling around, I definately saw mention of 305 Nova's with the TH200 being available in 1976. Maybe they were wrong. So can we say for sure that the tranny can't be anything other than a TH350 if it is original?

What I saw said that the TH200 was only used in light cars and not used with a V8 -- too weak. I suppose it's possible it wound up there anyway. You never know with the factory. Smile

The pan for it looks like the TH350 pan in Limey's images, only slightly smaller and with 11 bolts.

I am in desperate need of one of those on the bottom left... I have burnt 50 $ in gas in 4 days on have only driven 5 times back and forth to work.

I don't guess that would be to bad if it were more than a 12 minute drive!

Need Overdrive... ugh...
