ZZ4 Chevy crate engines. Has anyone bought one recently?
I am thinking of putting a motor in the 76 for a little street fun but trying not to get too crazy. The car will never be a rocket, but I figure an engine like this, 2400 converter and a set of 3.42 gears should wake it up. I don't want to get into building another engine because I have a tendency to go a little far. The Nova rebuild turned into Eagle crank, Scat 7/16" I beam rods, hydraulic roller cam with the Morel lifters, AFR heads etc, etc. So I figure a good crate engine that I can't mess with is a better choice. Thanks.

This is what I am planning to get later down the road.

Blueprint Small Block Chevy Engines are a great choice for drivable and reliable high performance engines. All rotating assemblies are balanced within 2 grams on a computerized balancer. Blueprint Engines are dyno tested and include dyno sheets. Best of all they feature a 30 month/50,000 mile warranty.
Recommended Stall Converter: 2000-2400 rpm

Go with their 383,you'll be happier. The 350 was geared to a lighter (Camaro) car. They have the HT 383 (GM).

I have also talked to Brandon at ATK performance engines from the Team Chevelle website. They have some good options too. They are not radical engines, just reliable street engines with a little extra power. This is a 383 but just a long block, not as the picture shows.

I don't have a 383, but I figure it's the way to go. That long stroke (ala 400) does make a difference. That's the good thing about a 400, even with occasional cooling problems for some folks ( not mine !!)

You'll be happy with a 383 for street use -- it's a low- and mid-range torque monster. Just don't take it over 6000 rpm.

I have the ZZ4 in my 76 Monte, a 2500 stall in a Hughes 350, and 3.73 gears, along with full length headers, dual exhaust, full MSD ignition, Holley 650 and an electric fuel pump. I love it. I just need to fine tune some things. Plus, I would really like a 4spd/overdrive. Eventually..

I am running a ZZ430 in my '74. It kinda is a version of the ZZ4... I love the way it runs and have a 200-4r behind it with a 3:42 posi rear.
