Likely 2.73 (mileage) or 3.08 (performance)

Re: 74 chevelle 28 spline?!?!?!?
My new '77 Elco was a 2.56, and My Malibu has 3.08 on the build sheet but it turned out to be a 2.73 !
2.56 seems low, but my Currie nine inch Ford in the Elco project is a 2.50, which I spec'ed for the 5oo torque monster, which will rarely see any high RPM...
Don't know what the lowest ratios are out there, but some 5th gen Elcos ('78-'87) seem to have like 2.29 ratios in some of them. All about gas mileage I would suppose....
redrider; you can find your diff. ratio stamped on the front side of the right axle housing tube, usually near the center housing casting. I don't have the code handy, but folks here can tell ya what it is....

I can see where a stump-pulling 500 could easily overcome the 2.56, but the 5th gen's running 2.29 with an OD trans really surprises me. The 200-4R's OD gear is .67, which would make an effective ratio of 1.53 -- when OD kicks in at 40-45 MPH and the TC locks up, the RPMs would drop so low that I don't see how the thing wouldn't just die. I drove mine with the stock 2.73 gear for a week or two after swapping in the 200-4R just as an experiment, and when OD kicked in the RPM's fell so far below the engine's power band that the car became an unresponsive slug. I can't imagine it would even keep running with a 2.29 out back...
