Never buying used tires again
A few months ago I got on a kick where I wanted a set of aluminum vette slot wheels for my Malibu. I searched and found a set that had "near new tires" on them. 255/60/15 Cooper Cobras. They looked great and the guy said he had the road hazard warranty from Discount Tire on them. So I figured sure, for $500 I thought it was a deal. Well now that the bugs are somewhat gone i've been out driving it the car has had a vibration. I found worn front end parts so I replaced those but the vibration was still there. Moved a wheel from front to back and it got better. Well, one tire was out of round. Went down to summit, got a new tire and got it on. Today was a nice day and I had two burned out bulbs so off I went to the parts store. I took the long way around. The ride is much better but now at about 60 instead of 50 it starts up again. No where near as bad but it is there. I cannot drive to Daytona Beach at 55mph and the shake at 60-65 will not be acceptable. I got home and jacked up the car and spun the front tires and from what I can see..........flat spots. The passenger side worse than the driver side. So two more tires and now that $500 has cost me $859. I wish their was a contraption one could get to test used sets before you fork over the money. Now I know why the guy was unloading them. And oh, the paperwork he gave me, Discount said they don't see road hazard on them. Lying SOB.

Re: Never buying used tires again
Yeah...that sucks. For this reason, I have always made it my policy to never buy/install used tires. Just have no way of knowing what condition they are in. Chalk it up to one of life's lessons, I guess.

Re: Never buying used tires again
That is lousy especially when the previous owner said the tires were good. That isn't right.
I work in a full service collision and alignment shop. I haven't bought a single new tire in 16 years for 5 of our cars, 15", 16", 18". Our daily driver was the 2000 Malibu has 200,000 plus miles on it. Runs 15" tires, some were so bad I was glad i had dental coverage cause it would vibrate pretty bad at 60 mph, so you just made sure to drive faster than that on the highway. Some tired I only got a couple thousand miles out of, some were almost new.most were half tread or less. I couldn't complain they were free. I'd be upset if like you I paid for them.

Re: Never buying used tires again
I had a bad accident when i was 18. Me and a couple of friends took a Road trip in my first car. I had only been driving for a couple of weeks. Here in Europe you have to be 18 to drive legally. Anyways i had just had 2 used tires mounted in the front couse the old ones where worn out.
To make a long story short one of the treads seperated from the tireand it exploded doing 65-70 miles an hour. We ended up slideing in the guardrail ripping most of the side of the car of. Luckely the car was old and Big so it could not get under the guard rail that was made from steel wire. The cop Said i was luckey since they had seen alot of more modern cars getting mashed under the wire killing people. ( the wire rails are now replaced from the same reason.) anyways i have never ever bought used tires since then. It turned out the workshop had taken the tires of from an accident damaged car, thats why the tire blew up. Also i am wery allergic to shakes from tires and such.

Re: Never buying used tires again
I only got these cause they came with the wheels and he made no mention of vibrations and they are a year old. Makes me sick but if I see a wheel tire combo from now on my offer will be based in the wheels and they can keep the tires. A place here said they see it all the time. They can true a tire and road force balance it at high speed. I'm going to try that. If not then he said he would sell me new ones for the same as summit.

I've bought used. I've also not had good luck with it either. I've had better luck with truck tires than car tires though.

Re: Never buying used tires again
Weaver Tire and Brake in Marietta, GA did a incredible job in trueing these tires (shaving). Only had to take off a little but they spun the tire, removed it from the wheel and turned it then remounted it and road force balanced. I'm going to take the two coopers to them that I replaced to them and have them do the same thing. All is well that ends well. Too bad their are dishonest sellers out there though.

Re: Never buying used tires again
Eeegads, that stinks. I can't say I've ever bought used tires. Not sure I could bring myself to do that.
