Trunk room
Hi all
I have my eye on 73 Monte that I plan on flying over and inspect myself. If the monte is as stated and I buy it, I will be picking up a lot of spareparts at Summit Racing, to ship home with the car.
My question is, will I be able to put a big block in the trunk of the Monte?
It will be a "Long block" so the heads will be on it, but nothing else. If you dont think it can fit in, will a "short block" without heads fit in?
Thanks, Viking

Re: Trunk room
The trunk is pretty roomy. I never tried stuffing anything like an engine in there, but assuming the trunk and suspension will stand up to the weight of an engine and you leave the exhaust manifolds off, you should be able to jockey it in there. I wouldn't expect the lid to close, and the spare tire will have to come out and go in the passenger cabin. You'd probably be better off removing the heads and putting them in there separately, because the trunk is a lot wider than it is tall.

Re: Trunk room
I've carried a small block (no heads) in the trunk of my 74 monte with no problems what so ever. So I think a big block without heads would not be an issue.
But I'd be more concerned with the weight of it bounding around. There are only two structural supports under the trunk pan. And the weight of the block possibly bouncing up and down along its long journey might cause and issue. If you were to do it, I'd at least try to lay a piece of 3/4" plywood on the floor of the trunk to disperse some of the load.

Re: Trunk room
I havent really given the weight issue a thought...so maybe I should just have it shipped instead!
Besides, I have just discovered that the transmission I want is located in the same state, just an hour from were I am going anyway, so it is better to throw that in the trunk instead :-) + a lot of other stuff I need...
