2020 Race Update
Finally made it out this year with a new motor.
Broke the end off the crank at Indy last year. Got the new motor completed, dyno'd, and dropped in the car with a week to spare before heading to the NMCA (National Muscle Car Association) Finals at Indy this past weekend. (No sense waiting until the very last minute - lol - the global pandemic put the kabosh on my ability to expedite the build).
The new motor is a Scott Williams built 572 cu in big block based on a GM Bow Tie Pro Stock CNC block and Callies crank. I'm re-using my AFR heads, Dart intake and Dominator from the previous 555. Engine dyno'd at 850 HP at 6500 rpm and 740 ft-lbs torque from about 4800 to 5800 rpm.
That translated to a number of low ten second passes at 3900 lbs. I ran the 10.25 index for my Nostalgia Muscle class and was shooting for 10 flat in the True Street categories. Best passes in True Street trim were 10.02 and 10.08, and I had an "accidental" 9.996 when I ran it out the back in NMC. The car has been 9.85 in testing under perfect conditions (mid November temps, removed the extra seats, no front bumper, no exhaust, hot tuneup on hot fuel) so this was the first 9 second pass during competition and under normal conditions (normal tune, through the mufflers on street tires).
I got some favorable press in the form of an internet mention during the daily highlights; as a result of that honorable mention we did a photo shoot for future print publication in the NMCA magazine, timing tbd.

Re: 2020 Race Update
Congratulations! I completely understand the trouble getting a race engine put together in these times. I had two small blocks machined in February, 400 for a restore on a 1978 GMC and a 383 for off-road Jimmy. Then the pandemic hit and things move at a snails pace. Everything is fitted for final assembly now, hope to break-in before the snow comes!

Re: 2020 Race Update
Glad to hear the car ran well out of the box and went back home in one piece. I would never build another engine without straightening it out on the dyno first. Its not worth putting it in the car and testing to find out something is not right.

You made the G3 crowd proud. What MPH does your new setup run?

Re: 2020 Race Update
Thanks, guys -
MPH is normally around 136mph. Race weight is 3950 lbs with me in it.
I'd like to spec out a new transmission torque converter and get that tested before the season ends.
I'm also in the market for new instrumentation, so please check out that thread. Feel free to comment here if you have any recommendations.
