1975 Hurst Olds W-30 Build - Page 3 Empty Engine Bay Makeover

Got an update video on the Hurst build. This is a few clips of video and pics I took along the way as I prettied up the engine bay. One step closer to getting this on the road.

Watched the video, that engine bay looks great! I'm glad you showed the powering steering pump, I think I am in need of a new one or need to tighten the belt.

Thanks Hawk! I had 2 leaks to locate when I bought the car. The major leak was coolant from the radiator and the water pump. I've never seen a radiator in that bad of shape. I was leaking everywhere and the top of the radiator was literally shifted over almost an inch compared to the bottom. Not sure how that happened. Any the power steering leak had me baffled for a while. Thought it was the pressure hose, then the pulley shaft. But it was that big o-ring seal on the front of the housing. You could see in the video it was completely flat and rock hard. I normally don't mess with rebuilding stuff like that when complete units are usually available and almost as cheap. But the only complete pump unit I found was on eBay and it was like $130 versus the $40 I spent on the internal pump unit. Everything else on the drivetrain is bone dry with no leaks. Got lucky there. Anyways, learning a lot from this ole gal as I go along.

I am here now at 5:44am. I worked 92 hours last week. That and a 2 hour round trip can wear an old man out.

Made a little progress on the Hurst this week with the help of a good friend. She's almost completely naked and hopefully will be ready for epoxy primer next week.

This is kind of a sneak peek of the video I'll be putting together in the next week or so highlighting all the metal fab/body work on this build. I'll follow up with another when we start laying down primer and paint. I'm gonna try like heck to get this done by summer. I guess we'll see how that plays out lol.

That car is going to be so very cool. To bad it’s only a
W-30. If it was a w-33, I would buy it in a second! Good luck young man.

Looks like you're deleting the roof side panel windows. Will you be fabricating custom interior panels?

Had to do some rust repair around where the quarter windows were. So everything is going back exactly the way Hurst did it back in 1975.

Sir, I feel that you jest at my statement. So, g3chevy (if that’s even your real name) I am going to give you a brief history lesson on Oldsmobile performance models.

The Oldsmobile car company was founded in Nineteen Hundred and a long time ago by Richard Old and Bob Smobile. These automotive pioneers wanted to build an American car to rival the best in the world. Performance was always a key ingredient to their success. Fast forward to the 1970’s. The Muscle Car era had ended and performance had taken a backseat. The great grandson of Bob Smobile, a man named Timmy Magilicuty, wanted to build the ultimate car. The W-30 and W-33 Hurst cars just weren’t what he was looking for. So, in 1976, the Bicentennial year of our great nation, he unleashed the Oldsmobile WD-40. This was by far the slickest car that Oldsmobile ever produced. The problem was, it was just too much of a car. In testing at the Bonneville Salt Flats, in stock form, it went 219.3351mph. This bested the speed set by Bobby Isaac of 217.2689mph in a highly modified Dodge Daytona. And yes, that car had a HEMI. It was believed that all of the prototype WD-40 equipped cars were destroyed, but rumor has it that one made it to the streets. I believe it was sold at a dealership in Des Moine Iowa, oddly enough, to a man of the cloth.

So when you jest my friend of the very special W-33, never forget the true Oldsmobile Special: the WD-40.

If it wasn't for the expansive knowledge and humor of Mr. 600+ HP (aka Revin Kevin), this whole thing would be boring. But I really love getting out in the shop and making one heck of a mess. If you look closely there is about 10 pounds of ground up paint on the floor lol. Wish I could do this everyday!

Made a little more progress on the Hurst this weekend. Took most of the day today stripping the hood. The repaint comes off pretty easy, but when I get down to the lacquer paint it gums up like glue. I ended up using a 40 grit disc on my DA sander to get it done. Slow but sure, no gumming up. But I'm thinking there might be a better method. Any suggestions?

I have used a paint remover and then sanded off the remaining paint.
